I just watched the first episode of HBO's The Night of... Holy crap was that ever good! A lot of complexity and a slow, suspenseful building of tension throughout. No real big name actors I could see except John Turturro, the rest a group of top character actors. The whole series is available now and I can't wait to watch the rest of it.

Ohhh the HBO doc-series on the history of hip-hop is awesome. Shad may have gotten canned from CBC radio but I just watched this first episode and it was amazing. He is the host and narrator. Well made, tons of classic footage and great interviews. Excited to see the others!

The second episode was even better. Very well-made show with tons of awesome archival footage. Stacked with interviews with all the founders/creators.

I could barely finish the first episode of the Netflix show, and stopped watching there, but this different. Just a cool look into the history of the genre (and what was happening in NYC at the time), from its beginnings in 1973, through to its rise into the mainstream (the way all the Bronx crews diss the Sugarhill Gang and "Rapper's Delight" is hilarious!). Definitely recommend.

Al, stick with The Getdown. Its a bit hokey but its pretty entertaining. Not meant to be a documentary.

Lol Praktik, this is ironic because in the doc Caz from Cold Crush basically says one of the Sugarhill guys lifted his rhymes directly from him on Rapper's Delight. They were all super jealous these nobodies from a pizza parlour in Jersey had the first bonafide hip-hop #1 on wax, that got mainstream radio play, etc...

There is some amazing Afrika Bambaata stuff in episode 2 as well - he's a genius/visionary.

Chuck - OK, I'll give the next episodes of Get Down a shot. Everyone seems to love it...

Watch the doc - they GOT SCREWED

impersonators using their name, label totally taking all the cash and giving them nothing

they go over all the "rhyme stealing" controversies too - anyway, worth watching

you'll feel sorry for them too

Hillary is pretty good if you like a gentle miniseries about the dude who climbed Mount Everest

We just watched the old movie last weekend to prep!

Can kind of see where John Cameron got some inspiration...

Looking forward to Westworld as well, but for some reason my expectations do not feel too high. We'll see.

Not sold on Westworld working out. I just don't see it translating to a TV Show (or Movie) without some of it coming off as really hokey.

Ash vs Evil Dead is back!

Didn't realize it would be so soon but imagine this was filmed directly or soon after season 1 finished - maybe they did both seasons at once and cut em up into two??

Anyway, havent checked it yet but heads up!

High-Maintenance-TV-show-on-HBO-season-1-canceled-or-renewed.gif

OMG you have to watch HIGH MAINTENANCE, which is now an HBO series, but started of as a made for web series on vimeo. Shows range in length from 5 minutes to 15 minutes. It is completely character driven - the acting is amazing and it so multilayered and fantastic I can't even describe it. How they manage to squeeze that much story and character development into each short episode - considering each show is about a new set of characters - I have no idea. The writing is brilliant.

It is a truly modern show with modern characters. I recognize a lot of people in them... you probably will too.

Highly recommended.

They have been pulled of the vimeo site I believe due to the purchase by HBO, but you should will be able to download them as torrents.

Yeah really like this one so far. The scene with the swingers party was freaking hilarious as was the one with the crystal meth gay guy!
