Shortage of trades people?

For the past while I have been trying to get into the Electrician trade employment field. It has honestly been one of the hardest things to get my foot in the door. It is all who you know and unionized. The most difficult thing is getting into the union because they keep on pushing the acceptance of new applicants back further.

This brings me to my question. If there is a shortage of trades people in this city why is it they make it so hard for people to start an apprenticeship.

And another fucked up thing is that all the colleges that offer courses on this field all say you must be employed before you can apply there.

Dude try U of T they are always hiring on new trades people i know this for fact cause i hire them to do my work for me .

You answered your own question. It's unionised environment. You said that they control entry. They are making sure that there is more work than workers. Means more money for them.

Welcome to the world of unions...

I slaved my way over 4 years to get into IATSE 873....

Now im a full fledged boom op. Its worth it tho. 4 years of hard work in film earning practically nothing... to $2400/week average. Why do u think its so hard to get into these damn unions???
