TRIP Project Coordinator – Community Health Worker
(21 hours a week .6 FTE - $18.50 per hour)
Part Time Contract July 16, 08- June 30, 09


Central Toronto Community Health Centre (CTCHC) is a non-profit, community-based health organization committed to improving the health of community members, particularly those at risk for poverty and discrimination. Our multi-disciplinary approach includes the provision of primary health/dental care, counselling, harm reduction, community development, advocacy, and innovative partnerships with other organizations. CTCHC is a leader in the development of inner-city health services: Shout Clinic focuses on the needs of homeless and street involved youth under 25; Queen West focuses on adults, families, and youth in the local area. CTCHC is a pro-choice and gay positive organization committed to employment equity and anti-discrimination. Both our sites feature beautiful downtown facilities and Queen West is fully accessible.

Position Description
The TRIP Project, a project of Central Toronto Community Health Centres (CTCHC), provides safer sex and safer drug use education, information, and supplies, as well as counseling and referrals, to Toronto’s diverse dance music communities.
The TRIP Coordinator responds to the needs of the rave/dance music community through community education, crisis intervention, resource development, and other health promotion strategies. The Coordinator is responsible for recruitment, training and supervision of peers and volunteers and for liaison with relevant community partners, party organizers and businesses. This position requires late night and weekend hours to provide service at raves.

Accountability:
As a member of the Harm Reduction Team, the Coordinator is accountable to the Director of Integration and Urban Health.

Specific Responsibilities:
Perform activities with community members to identify community issues and develop, implement, monitor and evaluate community development and health promotion strategies and programs to meet community needs.

To work with funders to ensure that the funding requirements are adhered to including gathering statistics, program evaluation, monitoring the budget and assisting with fundraising initiatives.

Recruiting, training and supervising peers and volunteers

Act as a resource to, and advocate for individuals, groups and communities

Establish and maintain links and develop partnerships with other organizations

Also responsible for working in a manner that:
• preserves confidentiality and seeks to minimize risk
• incorporates health promotion and harm reduction strategies and recognizes the determinants of health
• incorporates and strengthens interdisciplinary teamwork and a collaborative approach to the CTCHC’s work
• respects and values the diversity of communities and individuals
• contributes to CTCHC’s activities to collect, analyze and report on data, participates in research as applicable
• supports CTCHC’s student and volunteer placement programs
• maintains competence, and where applicable, a professional license to practice
• participates actively in staff, team, supervisory and other meetings
• reflects CTCHC’s Mission, Values and Service Delivery Approach
• follows health Centre policies and procedures.
• communicates clearly, listens accurately, is open to feedback, handles conflict appropriately, displays sensitivity to others.
• participates in CTCHC’s commitment to being a discrimination-free health centre.

Qualifications:

1. Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized university or combination of some post secondary education and significant experience in health promotion and/or community development
2. Three to five years relevant experience in a community setting
3. Experience in program coordination, project management and evaluation.
4. Knowledge of harm reduction and the rave/dance music community.
5. Experience in working with peers and volunteers providing training and coordination
6. Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications
7. Grant writing experience is considered an asset
8. Proficiency in language(s) other than English is considered an asset

Last time I spoke with Sandy and Erin (who were both on their way out after over a decade (!) of service), they said there was still a thriving rave scene (warehouse break and enters, just like back in the day) amongst the younger set and that TRIP's presence was just as vital as ever.

Just because we aren't attending the parties, doesn't mean they stopped happening!
