...mary's dress waves,
like vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays,
roy orbison singing for the lonely,
hey thats me and i want you only...

...dont turn me home again,
i just cant face myself alone again,
don't run back inside darling you know just what im here for,
so you're scared and your thinking,
that maybe we aint that young anymore,
show a little faith,
theres magic in the night,
you aint a beauty,
but hey your alright
oh...
and thats alright with me...

There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone on the wind
So Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

If this is a Springsteen appreciation thread, I will admit without shame that I'm On Fire has always and probably will always make me a little verclempt. Atlantic City too.

Plus I get really mad at stupid Americans who think Born in the USA is a pro-American song of national pride.

alot of people rather too many people think that,all you have to do is pay the slightest attention to the lyrics to figure out it's the opposite.this is most definitley a 'boss' appreciation thread because the man is a genius and the best american songwriter after dylan.

Do't even start: if I remember correctly Keruac's seen him before, and I get the greenskin thinking about it. :D

As for best American songwriters though... Personally I'd have to make it a top 3 and add Tom Waits.

this song means so much to me... i apologize in advance to the Springsteen fans, but when i was a teenager at summer camp, me and some other people wrote a song to the tune of Born To Run (but it was that amazing acoustic live version that i'm sure you're familiar with).
this song gives me that instant lump-in-the-throat.

Listening To "Greeting From Ashbury Park" right now

And the sages of the subway sit just like the living dead
As the tracks clack out the rhythm their eyes fixed straight ahead
They ride the line of balance and hold on by just a thread
But it's too hot in these tunnels you can get hit up by the heat
You get up to get out at your next stop but they push you back down in your seat
Your heart starts beatin' faster as you struggle to your feet
Then you're outa that hole and back up on the street

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare
and Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hardware
Everything stops, you hear five, quick shots, the cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose
but he gets blown right off his feet
And some kid comes blastin' round the corner but a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg screaming something in Spanish
Still breathing when I walked away
And somebody said "Hey man did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"
I wonder what the dude was sayin' or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?
you didn't post the camp lyrics, therefore no need to apologize. :p
The link from Dylan to Springsteen extends to Paul Kelly from Australia, who is playing Lee's Thurs Mar. 11
I'm a concert deprived girl. I gre up in a small town where no good concerts came near, and I have cheap and lazy parents who would neither drive me to Sudbury to see concerts there, nor give me money to buy concert tickets if I could get a ride. I couldn't make money on my own either, cuase they didn't let me have a part time job while in school becuase I had to concentrate on my grades.
It sounds harsh when I put it liek this, but they were great in other ways. They gave me money for booze and let me drink and smoke weed and didn't freak out about sex or anything, so I had to accept their odd little retrictions.
Now I don't go to too many concerts either, just becuase of the expense--they are terribly expensive, especially for the level of artist we're talking about here.
