Scotch

Went to Paris for 2 weeks and found La Maison du Whisky, which would make most people here drool.

Bought a bottle of Yoichi 15y Single Malt:

and... a 500ml bottle of blended Nikka whiskey:

Haven't opened either, but I'm going to wait to enjoy them with a friend and my brother. The Yoichi cost 102EU. I was thinking about getting the 20 year old one but it was 215EU!

Nice finds - and right about the time in the year when I start thinking about Scotch again. Fall and winter remind me of scotch.

LCBO is doing a whisky thing right now... does anyone have any particular suggestions for scotch to buy this fall? I was thinking something that's for a limited run here at LCBO?

not scotch, but I tried the Canadian Club Sherry Cask Aged this week. While it is by no means complex in its flavour profile, I was surprised with its sweet smoothness. Not bad for $35.

I just picked up a bottle of Highland Park 25 year old while I was in St Maarten...only paid $200.00!!!!! LCBO has it, if you can find it, for $375.00.

I looked for the 30 year old but it was nowhere to be found on the island and I was told that to even find the 25 year old, I was lucky, it was the guy's last bottle as well.

STOKED!!!!

The 15y Yoichi is... FUCKING AMAZING. :O So smooth... so good.

Edit: For a little while I was doubting why one gets into alcohol like this... stuff so expensive and it's just a liquid. But alas, it's so nice to have on the odd occasion.

I was in the LCBO checking out the new offerings of single malt today ( as we know there have been a few labels pulled and some new ones added). I noticed the Nikka japanese 10 year old, and remembered that the 20yr was rated best single malt in the world a few years ago. the 10 is over a hundred bucks though, which is a bit steep for a 10 year old...but I noticed they had some smaller sized offerings for 35 so I tried one.

WOW, at 45% and only 10 years old, it's sophisticated, suuuuuper smooth, and has a really nice balance and sweetness. on the sampler I'd consider the full bottle if i were in the market for something in the 100 dollar range. it's for sure worth trying in the smaller format if you haven't already.

god only knows what the 20 year is like, and how much that costs. one japan will do everything better than the rest of the world. true story.

oh snap, didn't even read the post above mine. I believe this is the same bottle but the 10 year. god, the 10 year is killer, anything older must be unreal.

I've never had a whisky this young be this silk and balanced. it's not flavour overload or smokey, but it's quite complex for its age...I just got poorer

I have a bottle of the 10 year old just waiting for me. Thanks for reminding me - will make for a nice nightcap after 2 hours of shovelling snow!

I'm fond of the Yoichi, but still have more love for a Talisker of the same value, I think. I find the Yoichi more leathery, while a Talisker 12 is just as robust but more smoke than leather - at least to me.

In Scottish Scotch news, I got my father-in-law this one:

Aberlour A'bunadh / Batch 31
70cl / 60.5%
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling
A really great dram at a very reasonable price for cask-strength whisky of this exceptional quality. Aberlour a'bunadh is hugely sherried and intensely flavoured: a whisky to cherish. Please note that batch numbers and strengths vary for this bottling.

V. strong, had to use a drop of distilled water to even out the palate; I still prefer the Laphoraig Quarter Cask for a similar price / taste, but this was good on a cold winter's night. Definitely a sipper.

word. talisker is WAY smokier.

I love me some talisker too, but this is a good everyday middle of the road balance I think is well done for a 12.

isn't talisker 12 only about 80 bucks?

@Tack - mebbe, but who's counting? ;)

I got the Yoichi 10 For just over $100 I think. I might be thinking of a Talisker 15 for about $112? Anyway, I'm JUST about to get me some of that Yoichi right about now...yummah!

If you had $125 to spend on a bottle but it had to come from the LCBO, what would it be?

I'm trying not to buy a bottle I've already owned, but I keep coming back to them.

Highland Park 12 or 15 year old, your choice...spend $15.00 more, and you'll get the very best 18 year old single malt in that price range.

In regards to a previous post I made, you can find the 30 year old at the Airport for $300.00...bring on my next flight!

Highland Park makes a nice smooth Scotch. Not a personal favourite as I like a lot more smoke, but a good drink, nevertheless.

I quite liked the McCallan Sherry Cask 12 that I *think* was around that price - I got it as a gift. Not a lot of ooomph, but a very nice flavour (imparted by using the sherry casks, as it were) that made it worthwhile despite the lack of my preferred peatiness.

For 125, you should be able to find a Talisker 12 to 15 that is, in my limited experience, my favourite Scotch so far.

Hey Tack,

When I was in Paris talking to the girl there at Maison du Whiskey, she told me that each one - 10y, 15y, 20y are all vastly different. Here are the prices in France for comparison: based on the 10y they'd be a bit more expensive if offered here in Canada

10y = 59E ($80CAD)
15y = 102E ($127CAD)
20y = 215E ($290CAD)

I have about a quarter left of the 15y. I wish I bought 4 bottles for a year's supply, but that'd be too much!

the 10 year old is 110 here. so I guess the 20 would be like 350-400 bucks. yar.

Would like to try it though, maybe I can save up in ING or something and not have to rationalize it. have yet to see either on shelves though.

as for the above conversation. I also think highland park is some of the best value for the money. the 15 or the 12 are both killer values. I also like dalwinnie 15 in the same sort of vein style/cost wise.
