Chicken nugget innovator Baker dies
'He changed the way we eat'

ITHACA, New York (AP) -- Robert C. Baker, an academic who changed American cuisine with poultry innovations such as chicken nuggets and turkey ham, has died, his son said. He was 84.

The longtime professor of food science and poultry science at Cornell University died Monday, Dale Baker told The Ithaca Journal for a story in Wednesday's editions.

"He really -- in more ways than most ever will -- changed things," Dale Baker said. "He changed the way we eat."

Baker created dozens of products, including ground poultry and poultry hot dogs. His innovations quickly caught on, particularly his chicken barbecue recipe, a Cornell icon.

"When the nuggets came out in the 1950s, they weren't too popular," Baker told the newspaper in 2004.

He always had a stand at the New York State Fair and the university said President Clinton and his family asked for his chicken barbecue during their visit in 1999.

Baker founded Cornell's Institute of Food Science and Marketing in 1970. He retired in 1989.

Raised in Newark, New Jersey, he worked on his father's fruit farm in nearby Sodus. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell's College of Agriculture in 1943, then joined the faculty in 1949.

Baker obtained a master's degree from Penn State University and a doctorate from Purdue University.

A member of the American Poultry Hall of Fame, he owned an orchard near Ithaca with his wife Jacoba. Other survivors include his two sons and four daughters.

Funeral services on Saturday will be preceded by a chicken barbecue at a nearby church.

^^^ AWESOME!

per capitas Canadians eat 30.5 kg per year (2003).

There are 2,481,494 in metro Toronto and 5,304,100 in the GTA. This means 75 685 567 kg's in metro toronto alone are consumed per year. A standard chicken is marketed at between 1.7 and 2.1 kg's meaning Toronto eats about 38,000,000 birds per year, or about 1.2 birds per second in metro toronto alone.

Fowl play was not suspected.
