i too would like to go to australia! but i'm bound to toronto and its university in all likelihood for a few more years - hopefully the architectural work-abroad will shift to the south seas (the past 2 years have been cuba, and spain!)

Have any plans for things to do while you're over there yet? Haven't looked into it very much, curious what others have planned.

<-- Will be in Sydney next month. :)

well other then the having no $$ saved yet part.
exact-ah-mu-ly :(

plans for australia? well, i'm going with my girlfriend in september, we plan to buy a VW van and drive around/live in it for the three months that our Visas allow us to stay (got yours yet?).

we plan to take a scuba course, some friends of ours just got back and they took a week long course where you live on a houseboat and dive everyday and get certified and they feed you for $400 AD for both of them.

we plan to eat tons of cheap, fresh seafood. and i'd like to go to the zoo where the crocidile hunter works. :D

we do not plan on going bungee jumping or skydiving - either of those things we could do here for less money and the experience would be about the same.

i'm open to suggestions.

Planning on a months long stay sometime, which means I'll be finding work there, I'm hoping to save enough for the return flight and 2 weeks of living (which shouldn't be a problem)

I remember hearing about a Canadian guy (during the Olympics) who was interviewed by CBC, turns out he tried the same thing but didn't buy a return ticket and he never made enough money to come back to Canada, he's been in Oz for 7 years.

Make sure to travel to Fraser Island. It is essentially a giant sandbar. Rent a jeep and explore!

I was supposed to transfer to the University of Westen Sidney this year, but at $30,00/year, I had to reconsider. Ive always felt that I belonged in Sidney, and I have friends down there, so Im up for going if I can save the cash. If I go, I have to be prepared to never come back though...

My buddy just got back from a 3 month trip to australia. He did all of the stuff mentioned in this thread and said it was all awesome. Except that the croc hunter is very busy and doesn't take the time to chit chat. He also said it is alot more expensive then he thought it was going to be.

LOL that sounded right when I typed it but it can be interpreted two ways...

months meaning plural, more than one :)

Besides, i wouldn't tell them. I have it on good authority that there are a lot of easy opportunites where they are used to employees not staying for long (migrating surfers and such). I was planning on working at a bar, or bussing at a restaraunt or something which would pay just-enough to get by if'n you catch my drift.

We'll see what we can see.

Saving as well - well trying too, its so hard though, just keep on thinking of lying on a beach in Thailand and hopefully that will motivate me to spend less money :)

DO NOT go to University of Western Sydney. I went there for a semester and I was indescribably dissapointed with the entire institution. Transferred to U of Sydney and that was quality.

Australia is a great - seemingly no insects, great weather (it rained all of about 30 days/year when i lived there, lots of short term employment opportunities, excellent culture.

Thinking of moving there permanently next summer.

I love sydney!

Definitely the way to do it. I was there for a year and next time I'm there I will SO be buying and driving! Have many friends who actually made money off of the deal

I didn't get certified, just took an introductory course, but I hear it's well worth the money. If you find it's not what you want/can afford, "no worries", the snorkeling is by for the best thing about the Barrier Reef

GO TO THE SYDNEY FISH MARKET!!!!!!!

Drove by on the Sunshine Coast, but didn't stop...Steve Erwin kills me though -flashback on his Panel appearance- LOL

I didn't either, and I hear that New Zealand is by far the better/cheaper place anyway
