Basically, I want to lay out all the things I do and am responsible for, and then a $$ pops up saying 'you should earn this'. To which I take that figure, march into the bosses office, and bang my shoe on his desk a la Krushev in 1960.
What you're looking for are industry-specific compensation surveys, which aren't generally available to joe schmoe (they're prohibitively expensive and offered by consulting firms to their clients and whoever else can pony up the cash).
While I'm sure there are career consultants who purchase these, I don't know of anyone in particular so I can't really recommend anyone. Try googling for career consultants or employment specialists....
Nick's right though, it would be a tough sell to walk into a manager's office and say "this is what other company's pay for what I do" and have anything be done as a result. If you're feeling under-valued, the best thing you can do is casually test the employment market and look for other opportunities. At the very least, you'll get a sense of what other companies are willing to pay for someone with your experience and education.
