Hey all,

I want to do a salary benchmarch for myself, and don't know who to go too, where to look etc. Any advice out there?

LH, I don't think you mean benchmarking.... can you describe specifically what it is you want to accomplish?
Basically, I want to lay out all the things I do and am responsible for, and then a $$ pops up saying 'you should earn this'. To which I take that figure, march into the bosses office, and bang my shoe on his desk a la Krushev in 1960.

There is no requirement for any boss to pay any worker anything even close to going rate for any particular type of work.

It's up to the employee to only sign up for jobs that fit their desired range for their job, taking into account experience and education as factors that may increase their asking price when negotiating for a job.

What you're looking for are industry-specific compensation surveys, which aren't generally available to joe schmoe (they're prohibitively expensive and offered by consulting firms to their clients and whoever else can pony up the cash).

While I'm sure there are career consultants who purchase these, I don't know of anyone in particular so I can't really recommend anyone. Try googling for career consultants or employment specialists....

Nick's right though, it would be a tough sell to walk into a manager's office and say "this is what other company's pay for what I do" and have anything be done as a result. If you're feeling under-valued, the best thing you can do is casually test the employment market and look for other opportunities. At the very least, you'll get a sense of what other companies are willing to pay for someone with your experience and education.

I bet you suck at your job and should be fired.

And show them an offer from another company that they can match if they want to keep you!

checkmate.

No way, that should be used as a last resort, if used at all. Having another offer as plan B is the way to go, but putting the screws to someone can get ugly. At best if the employer agrees to your demands, it is likely a CLM and he may just wait to can your ass should someone better come along in the future.

Then again I may be all wrong.
