The next season of Rock Star will focus on finding a lead singer for a hybrid band that calls itself Supernova.
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke have pulled together to create Supernova, the new band that will be featured in the reality TV show.
On last year's Rock Star, Nova Scotia native J.D. Fortune was the last singer standing to become the new front man for Australian band INXS.
Fortune has gone on to lead the band on an international tour and a new album. He was chosen from among 15 finalists, including four Canadians.
Rock Star talent scouts are currently auditioning hopefuls around the world. About 2,000 tried out in Toronto last weekend and auditions will be held in Vancouver on March 23.
Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses and Metallica were all gritty, metal-influenced bands that peaked in the 1980s.
Since leaving Motley Crue, Lee has released three solo albums and starred in another reality TV show, Tommy Lee Goes to College. He has been married to both Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson.
Newsted replaced original Metallica bassist Cliff Burton after his death in 1986 and stayed with the band until 2003. He has since played with Echobrain and Voivod.
After leaving Guns N' Roses in 1993, Clarke launched a solo career and has worked with various artists including Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.
The winner of Rock Star will record a CD with Supernova to be produced by Butch Walker, who's written or produced tracks for Avril Lavigne and Pink.
