Body found in singer's house in U District

By Seattle Times staff and wire reports

A body was removed last night from the University District residence of Layne Staley, lead singer and guitarist for the Seattle grunge band Alice in Chains.
KOMO-TV, citing an unidentified source, said the body was that of Staley, 34.

A King County medical-examiner's investigator said his office removed a body from the Staley address and planned an autopsy today, but he refused to confirm the identity of the person. He said it appeared the person had been dead for some time and would have to be identified scientifically.

Staley had a history of substance abuse, and in the early 1990s publicly acknowledged an addiction to heroin.

Alice in Chains, formed in Seattle in 1987, was part of the early '90s heyday of grunge. The band was mentioned in the same breath as Nirvana and Soundgarden.

The band's debut album, "Facelift," was released in 1990, and the song "We Die Young" became a top-5 metal track.

In 1991, the band was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Heavy Metal Artist.

The band's last release was "Nothing Safe — Best Of The Box" in 1999.

Staley also fronted the side band Mad Season.

won't be too shocking though...I remember hearing a report a couple years back that he'd shot up so much he'd developed gangrene in his wrist and hand....yikes

Implies that if a person is freshly dead, then one can use non-scientific methods of identification, such as witchcraft and whatnot.

:(

So so sad. Not a surprise, but I was always hoping he'd get out of his addiction. But with every report about his health he just seemed to be getting worse and worse.

RIP, Layne. "Dirt" remains one of my favourite albums.

Well...bad choice of wording, but I assume they mean fingerprinting/DNA/etc. as opposed to having someone identify him. (eww, I don't even want to think about it.)

This sucks, but I knew it what going to happen one day. I turned on the radio this morning as I was waking up and this is the first thing I heard. Then they played Rooster. These guys were one of my fav bands in highschool. Their Unplugged show was great. Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley have really good singing voices. I keep hearing people call him Layne Stanley too. It's STALEY, just to make it clear. If the dude is dead, at least get his name right. Can someone call Edge102 and tell Visnja to get it right? I can't get through.:)

No, I checked with all the irrelevant authorities.

They use witchcraft, and/or wait for messages from god.
