Mark Morrison - Return Of The Mack

Ooooh, come on. Ooh yeah.
Well, I tried to tell you so (Yes, I did)
But I guess you didn't know, as the saddest story goes
Baby, now I got the flow cause I knew it from the start
Baby, when you broke my heart that I had to come again
And show you that I'm with

You lied to me
All those times I said that I loved you
You lied to me
Yes, I tried, yes, I tried
You lied to me
Even though you know I'd die for you
You lied to me
Yes, I cried, yes, I cried

Return of the Mack
It is Return of the Mack
Come on Return of the Mack
Oh, my god You know that I'll be back
Here I am

Return of the Mack
Once again Return of the Mack
Top of the world Return of the Mack
Watch my flow You know that I'll be back
Here I go

So, I'm back up in the game Running things like half my swing
Lettin' all the people know That I'm back to run the show
'Cause what you did you know was wrong And all the nasty things you've
done
So, baby, listen carefully While I sing my comeback song

You lied to me Cause she said she'd never turn on me
You lied to me But you did, but you did
You lied to me All this pain you said I'd never feel
You lied to me but I do, but I do do do

Return of the Mack
It is Return of the Mack
Hold on Return of the Mack
Don't you know You know that I'll be back (Here I go)
Return of the Mack Oh, little girl
Return of the Mack Once more, girl
Return of the Mack Up and down
You know that I'll be back round and round

Ahhhh, Mark
Stop worrying about your big break

You lied to me Cause he said she'd never turn on me
You lied to me But you did, but you did
You lied to me All this pain you said I'd never feel
You lied to me but I do, but I do do do

Return of the Mack It is
Return of the Mack Come on
Return of the Mack Oh, my god You know that I'll be back
Here I am

Return of the Mack Once again
Return of the Mack Top of the world
Return of the Mack Watch my flow
You know that I'll be back
Don't you know.

Think of Mark Morrison and what comes to mind?~ Bad boy rogue?~ A dark prison cell?~Stun guns? Or in your face R&B in the mould of 'Return of the Mack'? ~

Whatever, the mental associations the Mack incites are vivid and frequently negative. In his relatively short career ('Return of the Mack' came out in 1996 reaching number 1 in the UK and number 3 in the US) controversy has followed Leicester-born Mark around like a dark cloud. So the first thing on dotmusic's mind upon meeting Mark at his London record company HQ is whether he deserves the 'bad boy' tag.~

"I don't think I deserved that bad boy reputation," answers Mark. "I know some bad boys who do deserve it. But if you're high profile and you get up to some mischief automatically people put you down as someone bad." And what a bout of 'mischief' Mark's got up to in his 26 action packed years on this planet.

He's completed three prison sentences - the most recent being a one year stretch for getting someone else to do his community service.~As you would expect the authorities soon caught onto the fact that the Mack was trying to pull the wool over their eyes.~Whoops, what happened there Mark? "People say I'm a liar. But that's not true." Mark replies. "The judge asked me whether I did my community service and I said 'yes'.~I did 42 hours of it.~I didn't do it all but he didn't ask me that.~Bill Clinton lied - I never lied.~I just stretched the truth.~He didn't ask me if I did ALL my community service.~I told him 'yes'.~If he asked me if I did all of it Iwould have said 'pass'."

Having paid his debt to society - at her Majesty's undoubted pleasure - Mark was released in February of this year to a much hyped show on Chris Evans' TFI Friday and an appearance at the Brit Awards.~At the time stories circulating in the press said that Mark had done a 'Tyson' by converting to Islam and changing his name to Abdul Ramoun. 'That's not true," Mark stipulates.~"That's bull.~I'm still Mark Morrison.~Anyone can ring up a newspaper and tell them any rubbish.~I'm just as Christian as my mother made me.~I'm a Christian boy.~Well I try to be!"~

It seems like hours of reflection in a cramped prison cell have taught Mark some lessons and the Mack who has returned is wiser and more philosophical: "The Father puts us through things that make us stronger and this has made me much stronger and wiser."~And from the sound of it this experience has also had a mellowing effect on his music. 'Best Friend', his duet with Connor Reeves, which comes out at the beginning of August has a laid-back, soulful, acid jazz feel with Connor's vocals sitting perfectly alongside Mark's heartfelt delivery.

Interestingly, 'Best Friend' was originally recorded over a year ago with Gary Barlow doing the vocals and Gabrielle on backing. Surprisingly - or maybe not as it turns out - this never came out. "I guess me going to jail put him off releasing the single. I was too bad for him!" he says with a cheeky laugh.

On his release from jail Mark needed a new vocalist to give 'Best Friend' that extra dimension. "I didn't want it to be someone who was too large or too known - people would think it would be too marketed. For me I think it's Connor Reeves who is going to be the next big thing in this country."

So the Mack is back. And this time the stance seems wiser, calmer and less bad boy than the thrusting 'Return of the Mack' posture of the old Mark.~Or is it?~The topic of discussion moves onto the Internet and the old Mark shines through: "I'm not computer literate but I'm working on it. I hear you can send pussy on the Internet too!~ A guy showed me some naked women on the Internet and it's madness. There's a lot of things you can do with the Internet!" he says with a snigger.~

You can try and take Mark Morrison out of the land of bad boy it seems - but you'll never take the bad boy from the Mack!
