So what's everyones opinion on the 19 year old Canadian who "slipped" to his death last week in Mexico. His family is launching an investigation.
i didn't hear about this, but it adds fuel to my refusal of visiting mexico, which is unfortunate.

Jerry Iwasiuk said the two of them started drinking at 11 a.m. Saturday, but Jerry was taken to his room by security guards around 3 p.m. At that point he had consumed six beers and four or five shots, he said, which was a typical amount for him, but hotel security said he was too intoxicated to remain at the bar.

whoa just read the full article, that bonkers.

Sorry you're right I can only speak for Liberia because that's where I went. I guess it is possible that further along the coast the beaches could be better. What about the jelly fish?
I swam every day and didn't see/feel any jellyfish...

Sorry, I meant Pacific! So hard to keep things straight... ;)
2nd day in a row you've miss quoted me eh?:p

The Jelly fish are on the pacific side. Where the volcanic ash beaches are. I think in general there are more jelly fish in the pacific ocean then what you would find in the carribean?

I didn't misquote you once! You were wrong about the Pacific side, and how was I to know you were referring to something DIWC said in some other thread in some other decade?

So there!

SO once and for all -- the white sand is on the PACIFIC side, not the Caribbean side.

Pfft what a light weight. I would have dranken all that and more before lunch. And I've been to that resort before so when he says beers he means those little plastic cups of beers.

yeah well the crazy part of that story is that after you only drink that much you wake up 17 hours later and your bro has been dead for quite some time.

Val, it's a shame for you to dismiss an entire country! I've been to Mexico three times and would go back in a second (just not to Cancun again). It's a huge country and has a lot of variety.
Corrupt police, crime in general, american tourists and other over exploited touristy shit places etc. are totally not worth the effort to find destinations where you (maybe) wouldn't see any of that. There are way more places that I'd find culturally more interesting.

It's probably second last on my list of places to visit, next to China (for completely different reasons). Both I'd turn down unless they were 100% comped.

haha you don't go to a resort if you're looking to experience a region's culture. even if you do excursions from the resort, the only culture you come in contact with is the one the locals think tourists expect (see: vacation braids). you go to a resort if you want a hassle-free vacation where everything's done for you and you don't want to abandon your excessive North American standard of living.

exactly.

if you want to experience Mexico or any country culturally you don't book an all inclusive resort holiday. Travelling and vacationing are often different things.

The hype about that guy who died is ridiculous. He got drunk and fell and his brother is full of shit. They were so drunk security had to escort them to their rooms because they couldn't stand up. That is a billion times more believeable than someone drugging them. The guy fell off such a 'high railing' because he was a drunk 19 year old who was goofing off. Shitfaced > Logic in this case.

And yeah like no one has ever got so drunk they slept the day away. Fuck that happens to people who post on this board every fricken weekend. Suddenly it becomes a scandal in Mexico but it happens in Canada and its a non-issue.

And of course, the bathroom window. Bathroom literally looked onto the rest of the room. There was a divider between the toilet and the rest of the room, but only a sheet of glass that closed halfway. you couldn't see everything, but you could hear and smell everything from the room, which was pure magic. Echoing farts and whatnot. Um, but it'll bring you and your vacation companions closer together, so bonus.

damn thats some hilarity right there!

Anyone been to one of the three Gran Bahia Principes in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic? I think I want to book the adults only hotel the Ambar. The Ambar rates well on tripadvisor and bills itself as a 5 star but I'd like to hear some triber opinions.

I'm willing to spend up to $1500 all inc for a week but it'd better be pretty dope.

Has anyone been to playa caleta in cuba, or the hoteteur palma real? from what i can see on tripadvisor they've been ranked 25th and 13th (out of 282 hotels in cuba) respectively.

first hand recounts are welcome!

Lil Miss,

Jan 8-15th was at the Gran Bahia Principe, Golden section. Paid $1200 all in at Flight Centre. If you want no kids, Ambar is way to go. The resort is spotless, and massive. Lots of food choice, great beach. A La carts were good, some were great.

I'd recommend this place to anyone, if you want some more in depth info PM me.

We stayed at the Bavaro and thought it was GREAT!! However, at the time, it was our first trip to a resort. While I look back and think it was great, I'll probably only stay at Sandals resorts from now on.

Thanks Don & swenard! I'm glad your posts confirm what the majority of reviews on-line have said.

The appealing part of the Ambar is definitely no kids, but also a la carte every night.

ps I think the Ambar hotel is meant to be like Sandals - only adults and nicer.

Just got back from Catalonia Riviera Mayan (20 minutes outside Playa Del Carmen) for a week. Paid $750 all-in for this 4 star resort. Resort was nice, food was great but the beach kinda sucks.

Also, CanJet is a piece of shit airline.
