TORONTO -- Maple Leafs captain and leading scorer Mats Sundin will miss the rest of the playoffs with a broken left wrist.

Sundin was hit by a puck in Game 1 of the first-round series against the New York Islanders and is now "out indefinitely," Toronto coach and general manager Pat Quinn said Thursday.

The Leafs won the first two games of the best-of-seven series, but the Islanders have tied it 2-2. Game 5 is Friday in Toronto.

"We have to have other guys step up," Quinn said. "We have to suck it up and go at it."

Toronto recalled Alexei Ponikarovsky from AHL club St. John's to replace Sundin on the roster.

Sundin had team highs of 41 goals and 39 assists during the regular season.

He was given shots to freeze his injured wrist before the second and third games of the series. Sundin skated in the warmup before Game 4 but stayed in the dressing room during the game.

Mikael Renberg, who has a left hamstring injury, also was unable to play in Game 4 and he might miss Game 5.

everyone take a deep breath and SLOW DOWN. Cujo let in some trash last game other than that he's played well... Sundin's out, is a big blow. that just means the vets have to step it up....Roberts has been playing well, now if Corson and Tucker light fire we should be alright for this round... without Sundin we are not winning the cup but we should advance @ least one round.

exactly. hometown bias aside, the leafs are still a better team even without sundin. especially with home-ice advantage for 2 of the next 3.

What games were you watching?

Joseph's playing like ASS.

Actually, the whole team's gotta get shit together. Work on their passing, their defence and their POWER PLAY.

Oh, and stick Schwab in for the rest of this series, maybe send Joseph to a rub and tug for a week to get his head back on.....
