Repair? Tech 12 problem

I'm re-posting this for a friend

Both him and I have been stumped so were hoping someone might have had a similar problem with their tech 12's

So my problem is this.

I purchased my turntables the 1200 M3D's 3 years used with no visable signs of wear. They still look brand new. Not even a scratch on the dust covers....literally *seem* brand new. Excellent Start/stop times, the pitch faders are still stiff. I first noticed that I had a problem with skipping while cueing records where the tone arm/needle would jump back to the front of the record or just of beat. I asked around and was told to buy new needles. So I went out a purchased Ortofon Nightlcub S and mounted them on brand new Technics headshells. Unfortunalty the problem still persists so I've done just about everything under the sun by either re-balancing the tone arm, adjusting the tone arm height and also adding as much weight as possible 6.5 grams to the tonearm and then again adjusting the tone arm height. All with the same result...It might help a little bit but still the skipping problem comes back. Now I just don't know what to do...I don't know what the problem is for that matter...do I just need heavier needles? Should I be setting these perticular needles on a slight angle? Is there a problem with the actual mechanics of *both my turnbtables or am I just a complete moron? If there is something more serious where should I take them for service within the gta? I've been told to play around with the screws that hold the tone arm in place because they could be lose or possibly not oiled? If anyone has any advice...please help me out. I'm tearing my hair out here.

The best needles that stick to tables are Shure 44-7's. (44G's are good too if set up right).

Now all needles come stiff from the factory so you need to wear them in for a while... but after that they should stick like glue.

DO NOT USE HEAVEY WEIGHT as you will eat up your vinyl. Only set them to the correct amount as in the manual.

If you need turntable service head to moog audio and talk to my boy Lee. He will tune them up properly and tell you whats wrong.

Try angling in your needles on your headshells a couple of degrees to hold the groove tighter. Also reversing of the tone arm weight allows it to hold the groove better. But it puts more wear on your records.

is it both or just one 1200?
if its both, you should check to see how secure those 1200's are on whatever surface they are sitting on. I had that problem before when i kept my 1200's sitting inside my flight cases. If i even breathed too close to them my needles would skip and i would fuck up a mix.
if its one 1200, it could possibly be a tonearm problem. last i checked its almost 120 for a tonearm replacement.
Also fool around with your anti-skating, and as mexicannnnnnnn said, don't use heavy weight, those records will sound shit in no time (esPECIALLY with ortofons) and don't get me wrong, ortofons are primo, but they will tear your records apart if you put too much pressure on it.

make sure the tone arm is locked. I never knew about it untill someone told me...most often when you have a problem with skipping in a club or whatnot, the wee switch isn't set to lock.

This shouldnt matter. This is only for the height of the tonearm base. I find it skips less (ie. absorbs more vibrations) when its NOT locked.

Sorry Henry but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this...Ortofon Q-berts are the best cartridges ever made to date. Highest output, low cue burn, ultra super stickiness BUT EXPENSIVE compared to the Shures.:p

I haven't tested them out, but for now I'll stick with the time tested Shure's.... just like my time tested Technics. :D

Dat's kewl:D ...I'm "Shure" everyone will be transferring to Ortofon cartridges once the DMC contests are done. Ortofon has paid big $$$ to be the exclusive needle of this premier DJ competition.:D

Sorry to have brought this thread off to a tangent but I remember there was a TRIBE member db who fixed 1200's..don't know if he is still doing it  but I read nothing but good things about him and he guaranteed his work when I inquired.:)

No it's set within the recommended height for the cart. I'm not saying 100% it skips less, its just a "feeling" that it skips less. Kind of like a feeling of how humans have over how much time passes...

you and mexicannn are both right. I stick to my shures when i practice at home (cuz the replacement stylus is a cheap replacement) and i use my Orotfons when i play out or record a set. I personally use the Nightclub-S, and my replacement styluses are around 80 bucks after taxes each :(

If you ask Brandon (db) nicely he might do it. He fixed one of my decks after a certain triber *coughlarisacough* spilled a drink on it.

Sounds like your having the same skipping problem I was having. Techniques wanted to charge me $350 to replace the tonearm and was just about to bite when the soundguy from Elmocambo showed me this neat little trick...

loosen the small silver screw at the top-middle of part # 77 on this diagram (don't know what it's called, but it's the screw that swivels the tone arm from east to west...in between the headshell and the counter weight)

I had to use one of those really small (silver) screwdrivers used for eye glasses. You'll probably need to find something similar if you don't have one.

When this little screwymajiggy gets too tight it causes the skipping no matter what you try....all you have to do is loosen it a bit. Mine has worked perfectly ever since, hope this helps.

If it's still too tight, try foreplay and/or KY Jelly.
