Nil By Mouth.
Gary Oldman wrote and directed this semi-autobiographical tale about growing up in family culture of addiction and violence in East End London.
Reminicent of "Once Were Warriors" with a British twist. Absolutely brilliant IMO
Also like "The Royles" without the laughs :(

well, speaking of oldman, thre's a littel known (in n. america, anyway) british film with him called 'we think the world of you' where he plays a young gay sailor who dates this oder guy. it's quite touching, and i'm not always easily touched.

Primer = amazing independent film about time travel. totally fucked. it makes you feel like there is something deeply bizarre going on as you watch it. i can't even describe how great it is. just watch it.

Lynne ramsey's Ratcatcher

from IMDB.com

Glasgow, summer, 1973. Dustmen are striking; bags of garbage add to the blight of council flats and a fetid canal. Ryan, who's about 12, drowns during a play fight with his neighbor, the jug-eared James. James runs home, a flat where he lives with his often-drunk da, his ma, and sisters, who live in hope of moving to newly-built council flats. The slice-of-life, coming-of-age story follows James as he tags along with the older lads; has a friendship with his quirky wee rodent-loving neighbor, Kenny; spends time with Margaret Anne, myopic, slightly older, the local sexual punching bag; and, has a moment or two of joy. The strike may end, but is there any way out for James?

her follow-up Morvern caller is equally amazing

Cosmos

A film from the late 90's from Quebec that I loved, but can't seem to find anywhere on DVD. Places like Suspect etc. will no doubt have video copies.

The Castle

an australian comedy about a family who lives near the airport and are defending their home from a runway extension - so offbeat, so australian, so endearing

And if you love Happiness of the Katakuris, then rent Izo or better yet Visitor Q.

My suggestions:

- Story of Ricky
- Steamboy
- Ghost in the Shell: Innocence

The Quiet Earth (1985)

A man wakes up to find himself literally alone in the world, and goes about trying to find other survivors, as well as to find out what happened. He suspects that a government research project he was involved in had something to do with the disappearance of everyone. Eventually he finds several other people, and once they begin to trust each other they try to figure out why they were left on earth.

though fairly well known, i've been surprised by how many i've talked to who haven't seen Pi or Requiem for a Dream.. or FUBAR for that matter, and the list goes on..

oh, and another that deserves much more attention is The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, which showcases Bill Murray, Willem DaFoe, Geoff Goldblum, Owen Wilson, etc, etc, at their finest.
excellent stuff.

dude, life aquatic, though it didn't do well box office wise, was still a hollywood film with big stars, ad hardly qualifies as "unknown film"

The Restless. Its a Finnish film about a chronic womanizer who ends up falling in love with a woman he sleeps with. I saw it years ago on Bravo and loved it.

Timecode. 4 simultanious unedited shots, following different characters, all shown at the same time (quartered screen). The first 20 minutes are utter chaos, but once you start to realize what's going on, its pretty fucking cool.

Happiness. A movie all about how different things make people happy. extremely fucked up. includes Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and William H Macey among others.
