Reason #1 Not to Buy New Celine Dion CD

If Sony thinks this will help them, they should seriously think again. Not only will there be hacks available but the CD Player manufacturers/software peeps may not follow protocol, thus deeming this 'new technology' useless. With Apple and other PC manufacturers moving towards making the PC the 'Hub' of all computing/entertainment at home this will only hurt sales for Sony and Celine.

Someone should sell Celine a clue - I think she missed the last one about marrying old fat men.

Dion's new CD crashing party for some users
Wed Apr 3, 1:57 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Celine Dion's latest release is generating heated discussions on Internet message boards. But the subject under fire is not the star's music -- it's that the CD will not play on computer CD drives.

Epic/Sony released "A New Day Has Come" embedded with Key2Audio copy protection in Germany and several other European countries. According to a spokeswoman for Sony Music Entertainment, it is clearly stated on the front of the booklet and on the back of the jewel box that the CD "will not play on a PC or a Mac" in the language of the country in which it is sold. Besides those notices, which the spokeswoman said were readable before purchase, the disc itself bears the same warning.

Should the consumer try to play Dion's CD on a PC or Macintosh (news - web sites), the computer likely will crash.

Some fans believe that the CD is more damaging than that, however. On the German discussion boards at MacFixit, Mac users claim that the CD will not eject using normal methods and that the intentional corruption of the disc's session data could unpredictably affect the drive's firmware. (Firmware is a combination of hardware and software instructions that are permanently embedded in the hardware's controlling chips, such as with a computer's CD-ROM, and altering it could cause permanent damage.)

Sony denied these allegations. "The CD will probably cause a system to crash, but it will not alter anything," the spokeswoman said. "And it won't eject properly, but that's just because the computer has crashed."

"New Day" was released in the United States on Tuesday. Industry watchers expect it to sell more than 500,000 copies by the end of its first week.

More than 10 million discs using Key2Audio CD-audio copy protection have been produced and sold, primarily in Europe. Key2Audio is a product of Sony DADC, a 100% affiliate of Sony Corp (news - web sites). of America headquartered in Austria.

I was jus thinking that it would be pretty funny if her private jet crashed into a mountain and she lived, but had to eat her fat ass husband and child to survive, and then she died.

Hahaha.... oh man.... that would be pure jokes :D

Reason #3 for not buying the new celine dion CD:

Celine Dion sucks.

ya, ya. read the article ... the CD will be unable to be played on PC and supposedly can crash your system if placed in. This is not the way we should be moving with digital entertainment.

Soon Microsoft will be coming out with the Home system based on the XBox which will incorporate game play, interneting, music playback, watch videos, etc. Guess what, this is based on a PC ... so basically you will not be able to play CDs that have this un-PC software.

Considering Sony Electronics is heavy into the evolution of the PC as a computing device towards the PC as a home entertainment device this makes no sense.

Not if global sales of XBox keep diving like they have been this year. Many analysts are calling XBox a "flop" while others call it the next "Sega Dreamcast". Sure MS has deep pockets to support the thing in its infancy but there's only so long a company can lose literally billions of dollars on a product before shareholders start to get Uber pissed.

Whether or not M$ fails with the XBox, Sony and Nintendo will be moving towards this idea and their boxes will become more computer-like .... hard drives, innerweb connections, PC-like OSes, etc.

The music industry has to wake up and realise that this is not going away and they have to change their business model for revenue generation. They must be run by 50-60 year old clouts that are just now starting to replace their 8-track collection with cassettes.

i don't want your nintendo loser propoganda clogging my inbox. (j/k) :p

actually, i just searched "xbox sales" on yahoo. the articles - all from independant sources - seem to agree that xbox has had very strong sales in north america, with slightly lower-than-expected (but improving) sales in europe and japan.

in fact, the president of toys r us was quoted as saying that customer satisfaction with xbox is incredibly positive while nintendo users are "very disappointed with the crappiness of the system". i uhhh ... can't find the article anymore but i do remember reading it.

so to rip the cd you have to play it in a cd player that supports it, hook the digital out from the back of that into the 'digital-in' and use sound capture software. because they have made it difficult, it is almost garunteed that somebody will do it. it will be on the 'net in a day and in three days everybody who wants it will have it. meh. silly sony.

Anyone who actually pays money to hear celine dion deserves far worse than a simple computer malfunction.

Reason #4 not to buy the cd is:

She is married to a didler!
She thinks that everyone in the world should give a shit about how in love she is with her husband, and has to create parades so that everyone gives a shit about her baby and her marriage.

Actually CloneCD and exactaudiocopy will still copy it, so long as your CD drive has firmware that lets it ignore bad TOC entries.... which most do now.
