seriously though.. just for a second.. do any of us still buy that anymore? Ok, so I'm no expert, and I doubt anyone on this board can truely say they are; but can you honestly believe that there are no negative side effects to some of these things we put into our body for a cheap thrill? Like, if Wiki says its ok, it must be ok, even though it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, and I get dizzy and fall over and numerous other warning signals from my body I choose to ignore... this is a toxic substance, as long as I can justify it I fully recommend it! Remember when GHB was supposed to be harmless as well? Its breaks down into something and something else (sorry can't remember, TMO? anyone?) so its totally fine! WHATEVER.

Poppers are safe. As someone mentioned, solvents work by a totally different method. They dissolve in the fats surrounding neurons and change their chemistry, affecting your brain and other nerves.

Poppers aren't a solvent, though they are dissolved in one. As mentioned the pharmaceutical affect is that it relaxed involuntary muscles, ie. ones you usually have no control over, like blood vessels and one of the muscles in your ass (the other one you can control).

To that end, poppers are a big body buzz coupled with a headrush. The headrush itself I don't particularly like as it can lead to headaches, as someone mentioned. The body buzz is great though and generally not something you get from other drugs.

The vapours themselves are highly volatile and dissolve out of your body in seconds.

Remember the little ampules that Duke and Dr. Gonzo would call "MEDICINE!" and break open and then go all limp briefly, as in the opening sequence to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"? That's poppers. It's called medicine cause at the time it was prescribed for acute heart conditions, as the relaxing of constricted arteries in the heart would bring in more blood and ward off potential heart attacks.

Still though, do not try to do poppers while laying down.

oh man, I just stretched and yawned at my desk and it felt exactly like a popper. Anyone else ever get this? I kinda like it.

strange, poppers have up more in the past six months than in the rest of my life combined, and i'm not hanging around the gays any more than usual.

maybe they're making a comeback?

ok, so the question is. do I go in and ask for poppers?

I have never tried them, but my friend said they are crazy, and I would like to get some for new years:)

Poppers are amyl nitrate. Smells like shit and makes your head spin for 30 seconds. Sounds like a blast.

once, back in tha day, in a little place we liked to call system soundbar, back when i was there every friday and was a pseudo-lesbian... once i was on my usual assortment of fun tiume stuff and the gay boys gave me a whiff of poppers as well... i was as high as i'd ever been for 10 seconds... then i thought i was going to die of a heart explosion for the next 10.

haven't touched it yet, tho given it's ass-sex qualities i woudn't be opposed to trying it again in an appropriate circumstance (i.e. in conjunction with ass sex but NOT in conjunction with anything else that may speed up my heartbeat.)

I can't find anything which indicates that poppers cause brain damage or any other health risks other than the minor risk of heart failure (which you are obviously not worried about if you have ever done blow) and hitting your head from getting too dizzy and falling over. It just feels and smells like solvents, but reliable sources (e.g. wiki) tell me otherwise.

Some possible risks with 'poppers' use are:

- There is research that links poppers use with a greater likelihood of high-risk sex. This may be because for some guys poppers help them to feel less inhibited during sex, which may lead to sexual activities they normally wouldn't engage in or feel comfortable engaging in. However, many guys who use poppers will also use condoms.

- Some guys experience headaches, dizziness, and nausea from use of poppers.

- Nitrites are a highly flammable liquid, creating a risk of fire near cigarettes, candles, lighters, or other intense heat.

- Poppers are potentially fatal when swallowed.

- Poppers can cause burns on the skin when spilled and around the nose, lips, and nasal lining when the liquid touches the skin during sniffing.

- Some users may experience temporary loss of erection. This likely relates to the fact that poppers reduce blood pressure throughout the body, including in the penis.

- There is research in animals and humans that links nitrites to a reduction in immune function. Your immune system is the system in your body that protects you from disease and infectious agents, like viruses and bacteria.

- There is research that suggests that nitrites - the ingredient in poppers that give you the 'high' - especially for frequent or high dose users, may be carcinogenic (cancer causing). This is not a definitive conclusion, but scientific speculation at this time.

Also... in a sexual situation be careful if mixing with Viagra... both lower your blood pressure, and combining them can potentially result in a stroke.

I was in a marathon party situation many years ago. At some point poppers made an appearance. A young lady who is on this board decided to give them a try for the first time. She had it to her lips before being told that is not the way to do them. At the time I remember wondering how bad it would have been if she'd swallowed it.

certain brands of poppers will cause me to go a bit soft. I tend to stay away from those, but also you just wear a cock ring to stop that.

as for the burns... OOOH MAN... they do totally suck, especially around your nostril.... they take quite a while to heal as well.

oh and weed + poppers = INSANITY

lilnick, i always appreciate your contributions, thanks for giving level-headed and factual insight into our often-ridiculous sex-and-drugs threads.

I forgot about this info from the Terrence Higgins Trust in the UK... they put out lots of good info and resources!

http://www.biology.chapsonline.org.uk/poppers.aspx

And if you want more detailed info check out the Sector Summary Report: Poppers

This sector summary report looks at the recreational drug poppers (nitrite-based inhalants), a substance with a long and contested history of links with HIV infection, immune suppression and AIDS. This report presents an overview of the evidence for links between HIV and poppers use. It also considers issues health promoters may encounter when addressing this with gay men.
