Will be either an old white guy or an old black guy. That is my prediction.

I haven't read up on how they choose a Pope but I assume they picked this man because he's from South America and they want to keep those followers as the interest in the Vatican is depleting each generation. It's a really smart move actually as the Hispanic communities in South America are still very devoted to the Catholic church. Choosing a Canadian would've been too dangerous of a move and risk the church being poisoned by progressive views.

Is he at least cute?

Pope Frank!

First pope from the new world and SA has more Catholics than any other place on Earth! So it had to be him.

Oh great.. Another conservative chosen.

To be fair is there such a thing as a progressive or liberal in the Catholic Church? I mean, at the level of Cardinal you're pretty much chapter and verse, there really isn't much room for interpretation except at the minutiae level, stuff like the thread count of the vestments or how many litres of holy water to put in the font at St. Peter's.

Could care less but it's the topic of the day.

I was saying on Facebook that I'm happier about Chris Hadfield becoming Commander of the International Space Station today... he's closer to Heaven too.

He may speak Spanish, but he's hardly Latin American.

As with many Argentinians, he's of Italian descent - and has an Italian last name.

I just looked. PERFECT.
Jorge Bergoglio. Born and raised in Buenos Aires.

That couldn't be any more perfect ethnically and culturally.

Let's see what hateful things he'll bring to the world. Yay.

Yes and No. There are definitely "Contemporary" catholic priests, but they end up being excommunicated by the church as a whole for their more progressive beliefs.

Many have formed their own church, based off catholic principles.

You mean..upset over some conservative cardinals picking some conservative pope, based on some mythological creature who watches over us day and night (kinda creepy), who can have major influence over a very large number of people and leaders in numerous countries? No, I guess I'm not that serious.. ;)

A lot of media are referring to this guy as an "outsider". He is 76, and went into Catholic seminary at 21. If anything, is an extreme insider.

An outsider would be if they made brought someone in from outside the church to deal with all the sexual abuse and other issues rife in the religion.

FWIW, he's not an insider in the sense he was an existing part of the Vatican administration. He's also the first Pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit Pope. Jesuits are more of an intellectual breed of Catholics, which isn't to say they are less dogmatic.

This guy is white, old and holds conservative positions on many social issues (probably has that old person musty smell too).

He may be an outsider, but it doesn't mean he was anti-establishment. If anything, he seems like he'd be a champion of the status quo.
