One of Toronto's busiest highway junctions is partially closed after a tractor-trailer carrying pigs flipped over — and many of the animals escaped.

The ramp leading from southbound Highway 427 to the Gardiner Expressway eastbound was shut down after the accident early Monday morning.

According to police, the 26-year-old driver apparently lost control heading into the city and the truck overturned.

"Too much speed was involved and the truck overturned and a number of the swine escaped from the vehicle ... also, too, a number were unfortunately killed and some were injured," said OPP Const. Graham Williamson, who spoke to reporters at the scene.

There were 235 pigs in the truck. About 60 escaped and began wandering on the highway.

The driver, who wasn't injured, has been charged with careless driving.

"Normally getting things back to normal would take a couple of hours," the CBC's Colin Butler reported from the scene, "but police are waiting for inspectors from the Canada Food Inspection Agency. Provincial and federal laws require that the animals be examined."

Some of the animals have had to be put down because of the injuries they suffered in the crash,

Police and firefighters have tried to get the remaining pigs back into the trailer but the animals have had other ideas and for the most part have been extremely unco-operative.

Police say the section of highway may remain closed until at least mid-afternoon while they work to corral the pigs and right the vehicle.

No oinkers dead in this one!

This 427 ramp's my exit onto Lakeshore. On the way to work this morning I was warned, but seeing it.... WTF? :) Livestock on these routes isn't a new issue... does anyone remember the poor cows that went astray after an accident in the same area two years ago??

No choice but to shoot runaway cow, police say - thestar.com

    They were cute, too. *mooo.*
