PHUNKfest

After an awesome Boxing Day Battle at Turbo, I didn't think it could get any better...

I feel as though the Toronto Breaks community has spoiled me this week, and I'm completely ungrateful.

I arrived at System shortly after twelve, and the place wasn't as packed as I thought it would be. I guess most people were tired from partying the night before, or had to work the next day.

But I had an awesome time. I always get weirded out, initially, when I go to a Breaks party and it's not the familiar BREAKfest crowd; I'm not sure why that is. Maybe I equate Breaks with that specific crowd, because BREAKfest is one of the few times I actually go out.

In any case, the amalgamation of PurePhunk and BREAKfest was the perfect evening for the first day of the real millenium.

Big League Chu and D-Monic played familiar, routine sets that kept me dancing all night long, and Meric was a pleasant surprise at the END of the night. After waiting over an hour for an "opportune" time to leave, I just had to ignore the track selections and grab my coat. It was a difficult decision to leave, as it was a party full of the best tracks of 2000.

I can't believe I've gone to two good parties on a Monday night (Morillo@Guv't, PhunkFest@System) and I also can't believe I'm still awake at 6:00am.

My only hope/plea/suggestion is that future BREAKfests be thrown in the main room, instead of the backroom. It was still intimate, despite a smaller crowd, and the space is much more danceable.

A special thank you goes out to Heather and Chloe for being so random, and for Dan-Pat-France for throwing yet another great Breaks night.

Lately, I've been a ball of compliments...but I said it before, and I'll say it again... "Snarkiness be damned, PHUNKfest was Phunkin' amazing!"

PS: D-Monic...are you gunna throw this on your website too? Buahaha.

Yea this night was fun. I got some decent pics and had good fun. Didn't know anybody there but met some cool people. Just wish I wasn't so low key from NYE. Respect to the promoters.

All I have to say is this:

There is a lot of sketchy kids that were at this party yesterday night. The music was really good, especially that dj; Big League Chu. Really good selection on the breaks.

Yesterday it reminded me of a high school dance, very, very few people dancing on the dancefloor at around 1:00 am (when usually by that time dancefloors are packed)

Basically yesterday it boiled down to the following; the music was very good but the atmosphere was very, very sketchy. I really dislike seeing young adults (over 19) trying to act cool at the edge of the dancefloor. Is it just me or does anyone else go to a club to dance and not to stand around trying to look cool while not even talking or socializing ???

I am really sorry if I sound jaded but yesterday it reminded me of why I do not rave anymore. That whole attitude of "coolness" and "chillin' out" while a few people dance on the floor and get stared at by others who don't choose to partake in the social activity that you are there for- is just so annoying to me!

If you are too tired to come out and party, don't come out at all...stay home.
You go to a Church to pray.
You go to a hockey game to cheer for your favourite team.
You go to a Club/rave night to dance, to be social, to enjoy yourself. Not to seat around and try to look/act cool the whole night. I realise that some had probably been out partying the night before, but why come out at all if you are so tired?

I have no complains about this party in particular, the music was great and I had a good time. This was mainly due to the fact that I was there with a couple of friends that noticed the same things that I did. So we made the best out of the whole enviroment.
Kudos to the Big League Chu and to the promoter for putting on a different night at System. Breaks are a refreshing change from Progressive House.

(did i look cool?)

Thanks for the tip but frankly, I'll do whatever the fuck I want. I've got something called free will. I came out to have a few drinks, see a few friends, and listen to some breaks. Sometimes, that means I want to just stand there and listen to the music. Is that such a crime?

Anyway, I had a great time last night. BLC was wicked, D-Monic played that DJ Stew track I love so much, And the beer hit the spot.

Thanks to all that made it out last night.
Worked out to be a pretty good jam filled with purely educated breaks lovers.
Happy New Years Everyone and look out for the beats and breaks we'll be droppin' in 2001.
Mad respect must be givin' to Dave Saddler who played the best set last night. If you were there it was 11:30 - 1:00am. Too bad we did'nt have it recorded.

Look out for Pure Phunk in London on January 14th @ Lush.
