well after a long period of time forgetting about this man, i've taken up a great interest in his work. most people don't know who is his, but i'll fogive them. i think this man should go down as the best hip hop producer ever.

i just picked up his release PeteStrumental. it's basically a pure instrumental hip hop album boardering on jazz, funk and all sorts of cool stuff. if you like music in general, look this man up. it blows me away how ahead of his time he was. most of his stuff from the early 90s was totally overlooked by most people. from his work you can only guess that people ranging from the roots to dj shadow must have grew up buying his records. although on some tracks he lacked production quality of sound, he was always ahead of the game in creativity and overall musical vision. part of the sound issues can probably be chalked up to poor technology. better sound equipment would have made a world of difference i bet. to most ears though, this instrumental album would be pure gold with no weak links; i'm just a really picky guy about al the little pitches and tones. if i can recommend any artist to look up, I pick Pete Rock.

i know no one cares about my thread, so i'll post my own reply...

to keep with the topic, the album "the Main Ingrediant" is one of the best hip hop albums i've ever heard. after more listening time, this album is pete rock's finest work and deserves to be ranked with some of the best albums

hellooooooo....

The Main Ingrediant is weak compared to the greatest hiphop album of all time IMHO.

"Mecca and the Soul Brother"- Pete Rock and CL Smooth

NOW THATS AN ALBUM!! T.R.O.Y., Creator, that freestyle by lil dap...

Petestrumentals is sick sick sick!!!! Really regret missin him when he was here. :(

I don't think it was a limit of his technology for his early work. That's what he wanted. Sure he could of used a clean Akai MPC but opted for the dirty grimey sound that the EMU SP 1200 put out. (pretty sure he used a SP 12 instead of a MPC)

thanks :)

ya sometimes I cringe when I think of some of the hip hop people on this board must listen to...

or people in general.

I gave up on hip hop, now I pick up stuff I missed and don't keep up on too much new ish. Watered down to the point of no return.

peace,

Destro
