Pacific Rim? Anyone hyped?

There is? Like what? I see no difference between this and the other filth you mention.

How is this any different?

HORRIBLE script
HORRIBLY cheesy lines
HORRIBLE transparent acting
LOTS of action
CRAP romance
TERRIBLE happy ending

This is hollywood at its finest: Mix love, death, anger, war, action, bad script, and mix it up and get garbage.

I see it more like an earnest and intentionally cheesy script with dialogue and characters that are a simple backdrop to some epic and beautifully done giant robot vs. giant monster fights. I don't know how you can complain about the romance because it was barely there. They don't even kiss. It has a happy ending because it's not a dark movie - it's a romp. The dialogue was ridiculous, the pace was perfect, and a totally gorgeous 25-storey robot smacks a monster in the face with a ship.

Maybe it was a 'crap' romance because the director intentionally wanted to show that a man and woman could work together (and develop some kind of bond) without it being sexual? So in effect it wasn't a romance at all.

I think kids (lets say age 6 to 12) can be critics in their own right, or have preferences if nothing else. I preferred certain movies and certain jokes more than others when I was a child. There are certainly Disney movies that have bombed both in the theatres and with DVD sales.

If you are equating Pacific Rim with Death Race 3, and claiming there is NO difference, then I'm not sure we can have a productive dialogue on the subject.

I usually find "appeals to there being no difference" to sound something like appeals to stop thinking...

I'll be seeing it.. not expecting Oscar worthy performances, but it clearly isn't that type of movie. Roger Ebert had a reasonable perspective on movies.. he didn't grade them based on what he liked, rather he graded them on how well the film accomplished what it set out to do.

And this, according to the director, is what he set out to do:

Guillermo del Toro is a man

How do you tap into your inner 12-year-old at age 48?

There’s not a shred of irony in any of those movies. There’s not a shred of postmodernism, wink wink, nod nod, I’m above the material. I’m in there.

I can't believe I was actually arguing with you guys about opinions. If Del Toro intended on making a movie for kids then you're right, it was an absolute blast.

lol! Sold!

you're gonna hate it. It's a fun movie but really cheesy...like Starship Troopers cheesy but not as smart.

I saw this on the weekend. It was giant robots smashin up monsters. That was what I came to see and that was what he delivered on. The script and plot are Saturday Morning cartoon caliber.

Walking out the cinema was hilarious. Every girl was like" what a piece of crap" and the guys on their arms were "f*ing awesome movie!"

I saw the trailer for this when seeing Superman... Is this some Voltron / Grendizer shit? But like real life movie style?

Just checking...

I finally saw this today.

Was it epic? No. Did I enjoy it? Strangely yes. I loved the concepts...and the apocalyptic nature of it all. Mankind forming as one to make this army of robots to fight these ugly fuckers.... I could actually make out what was going on during the CGI fight scenes. I went in with low expectations and it was better than expected.

Dare I say... I think this was better than Superman.

I recently saw this for the first time. My reaction is that it is a steaming pile of crap. Terrible terrible movie, made even worse by embarrassingly bad 'acting' by Charlie Hunnam.

One of the worst movies I saw last year. Plot and acting were redonkulously stupid. I guess if you like things that go smash smash it was a good time. If so, you might also like the strobe light show at this one club I know.

"that shit is so fake"

"he is such a bad actor"

I still get the feeling, deep inside, haters enjoy the hating so much and finding the problems that in this way bad movies become entertaining still.

At least I know a few people in real life, and some posters here seem just like them, for whom the reason to watch video content is to criticisize and find the inconsistencies, the plot holes and the bad acting.

Other people go with the flow, its the Tao of Filmwatching vs The Art of Film Critiquing

Dont get me wrong, nowhere near a great movie and like many such entries in this kind of thing, had about 45-60 mins in first half that plodded along way too slowly. But I wasn't watching this for the great writing or the amazing acting, I was watching for the whizz bang and the ride - in 3D with a vapourizer at hand, this movie was a pleasant waste of time.

And there was some artistry underneath the deviances from excellent execution, director was paying homage to a tradition of film making and in some moments he captured it pretty well.

It is definitely the best A/V experience i've had in recent years, and is my demo bluray if anyone wants to see why they should get a 3D tv.

I think anyone who didn't see Pacific Rim on a proper screen, with a proper booming system, and in proper 3D didn't experience the entire point of the film.

Not a film to DL and watch on your tablet.

I want to like this movie as it looks kind of cool. But I have tired to watch it three times now and I just can't get through it.

I like a lot of schlocky movies. I can enjoy stupid blockbuster popcorn films as much as a 9th grader can. I had no preconceived notions about what Pacific Rim was - but honestly, the plot and acting were both SO bad that it bordered on unwatchable for me - I can appreciate the spectacular visuals, but it wasn't enough to save it.

That's great. Like I said, there is this club I can take you to. The light show will blow your mind. There may not be any substance to the music but that doesn't matter right? :p

I'm just bustin your balls. Action flicks are at the bottom of my movie genre list. It's like I stopped watching Bruce Willis movies 10 years ago. Why do I need to see another rehashed plot with Bruce jumping from a speeding car to land on his feet and save the world.

I'm not a regular movie "guy" and I roll my eyes when they want to watch The Expendables et all. I'd rather watch indie flicks and catch the above average Sci Fi/Action flicks where some thought has gone into them. Alas they are rare these days.

Now don't get me wrong, I like to see real life explosions, especially when I'm in charge of causing the explosions. Now that's fun. Well, except fireworks. They've been played out after 30 years.
