Oxygen Bars- What's up?

I've been hearing a lot of buzz about oxygen bars lately, are they the next big thing or what?

Apparently a lot of clubs in the U.S. have oxygen bars set up now. The oxygen pheonomenon is really popular in cities like L.A. and Las Vegas, not only with clubbers, but people at conventions, salons and health clubs.

What are the benefits of visiting oxygen bars?

Has anyone seen anything like this in our clubs yet?

There are a couple of them in the city- I had a friend who used to go to an oxygen bar pretty often.

They allow you to get a lot more pure oxygen in your system which makes you feel more energized and clear!

I would be really concerned to have them at a club or something, because who moniters exactly what kind of stuff they're pumping up our noses?? I wouldnt trust it! *S* I'd rather get a professional giving me the tubes!!

Your body is adapted through millions of years of evolution to utilize 21% oxygen (such as is the atmosphere). At this percentage, your blood is saturated with every breath (i.e. no MORE O2 can be put into it), and thus oxygen bars are bogus.

In fact, they might cause some damage. Too much oxygen, and you can form some neat-o free radicals, such as superoxides... we've all heard of free radicals, haven't we? They are not good.

Oxygen bars are a scam. The only time it is necessary is if there is actual damage to the lungs, or in hyperbaric chambers for burn victims.

they had one at the smirnoff party inside the warehouse.

they all seem like scams....who knows if its actually oxygen going in or how pure it is.

A friend of mine was a nurse in Australia and she said one of the nurses kept a patient hooked up to the oxygen tank too long and it basically turned him into a vegetable.

I've never been to the "IT" entertainment complex (known as Club IT) but I hear they have an oxygen bar.

What about what Tyler Durden said in fight club, about oxygen making you calm and relaxed? Is that true?

I've been there and I never saw it.

Sure, that's the science of it, but everyone I know that's tried it said that they got all dizzy and stuff. Maybe because they don't have to inhale so hard to get that 21% so when you are done, you take it off, and you gotta start breathing heavy again and you feel choked. Just a guess.

I've just always heard people saying they feel a buzz.

Yup... the very same people I sold caffeine pills to for $20, and they were rushing for hours. And the paper from the hole punch had them hallucinating for hours.

Seriously, though, the reason they are getting a buzz is because of the breathing apparatus... hell, breathe into a paper bag for a minute and you'll get a buzz-- doesn't mean it's good for you (hmmmm.... business idea?).

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the science of it, but at my work we have a first aid kit including an oxygen mask and tank. And I know that on more than one occasion, co-workers (including myself) have come in to work hung over, taken a healthy snort of O2, and felt good to go.

My guess is that people feeling a little slowed down by alcohol could probably take a few good whiffs of oxygen too, and (perhaps falsely) feel energized again.

I don't know if it's bad or not as PosTMOd suggests, but I'm guessing I've put much worse things into my body than oxygen.

that's just ridiculous.
absolutely ridiculous.

a few questions:
how much do people pay extra to get into these places?
do they drink alcohol once they're inside?

Here's an experiment for everyone to try:

Deep breaths, all the way in slowly, and all the way out, slowly.... about a dozen breaths.

Feel energized? Now, instead of taking shots out of an oxygen mask-- which regulates your breathing-- you can have the same effect without the risk of damaging free radicals.

PS: I don't like the negative connotations that alcohol is getting in this thread. Let's not all forget that alcohol (the kind we like) is 47% oxygen.... mmmm....

Haha.... Medical oxygen is one of the few things I can provide. It's excellent for treating and preventing shock for anyone who has experienced any sort of trauma.

Indeed... when in shock, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, which means that not enough oxygen is getting into the lungs and/or acid (from anaerobic energy production) and carbon dioxide build up in the blood and tissues... quick way to stop this is to make sure enough oxygen gets into the lungs by forcing pure O2 into them...

BTW: a hangover is not trauma ;)
