OMG I just got spanked at work!

OMG I just got spanked at work!

Okay okay… not exactly… but close enough.

So I’m working today in the lab, building and testing a new product we are about to launch.
And I’m standing there… soldering some wires together, when all of a sudden… a man walks up behind me, and smacks me in the ass with a stack of papers!

I was so shocked…I didn’t know how to respond. I turned completely red!
My first thought was “ My jeans are too tight! I’m never wearing these pants to work again!”

So now… I’m feeling kind of confused.
First I feel a little offended… but I don’t want to make a big deal out of nothing.

The guy that did this… is much older then me… but he’s not my boss.
I’m not sure what to do… I mean… if I don’t say anything… he might assume that he could do this… every time he passes me.
How do I handle this?

I work with mostly men, and usually everyone is really professional, so I really don’t know how to deal with situation.

Ask him what he was thinking and regardless of his answer, tell him it was inappropriate.

Depending on his response, you should tell your manager or hr.

If you can, I would complain to a superior. Or HR. You have that right. In fact, you definitely have the right to *not* be smacked on the ass at work.

Whatever.

The human rights code specifically has sections regarding "ass slapping with papers to remove clinging marmosets and other monkey-like primates."

Disagreed.

In the grand scheme of things, it yadda yadda yadda violates your rights..

But I mean, COME ON. It was just a paper slap.
It's not like he goosed you.

I slap people all the time with stuff I'm carrying. And sometimes it hits the ass by accident.

It might not even be that you're a female but young.

What did you say?
If you didn't like it, then why didn't you say "hey, do that again and I'll sauder your balls together."

My friend looked at one of his managers with his tongue sticking out (not on purpose) and was fired on the spot for harassment.
I would most definately talk to someone about this!

Trust her on this it does, Mongo's be warned.

I read your post, definitely wrong what that guy did.

But back to the "real story here:

So you were working on your new product, soldering some wires together....the BOOM?

I mean a chick with tools, in tight jeans is so very hot right now.

Clearly you didn't read the uniform policy when soldering some wires together:

mini skirt
push up bra
fish-net stocking
High heels
etc.

just let him know you didn't appreciate it, and not to do it again. then crack a joke to lighten the mood.

maybe watch him for the next week or so and see if he just goes around slapping everyone like that. if so, whatever. it's just your bum. I'm a chick and my hockey coaches used to slap my ass all the time, like before or after a shift change, and it was really no big deal. when I played with guys they did it to them too, and when I played with chicks they got it as well. so bum slapping doesn't have to be sexual.

maybe he's just big into sports or some crap and got carried away. in which case it would be shitty to get him into trouble.

if he keeps hitting you in the butt, and it seems gross, then talk to him and your boss.

Is that like when rape victims feel guilty, like they were asking for it and it was there fault? :p (there is some clinical term, no idea what it is)

who cares how tight your pants are? dude shouldn't be doing that. wear chaps to work if you want, nobody should grab you.

At my old insurance 9to5, some new guy called this other employee "Ben Gay" jokingly because his first name was Ben

Fired on the spot, didnt even last a week

your joking. that's ludicris. an example of taking harassment to another dimension. even if it was intentional it's not like your friend flipped the bird. i definetly be talking to a lawyer on that one.

ok, honestly.

You have too look at the big picture here. Generally speaking, most people would construe ass-slapping as harassment, unless you had previously welcomed a joking around environment in the past (i.e. people joked around, you smaked people with papers while kidding around and people have done it to you - even in the arm). Even then, you'd still have a case.

It's best first to talk to him. Tell him you're pissed, and ask him why he did it.

If you're still pissed (his response doesn't satisfy you), then approach your manager/hr. Keep in mind he may be so sorry that you'll forgive him - if this is the case, follow up with your manager letting him know of the incident and give him details of his response. If he was really sorry, but you're afraid it will happen again, go see HR immediately. If there were any witnesses, give their names. He will most likely be spoken to and given a warning. I doubt he'd be fired unless it was clear to them that it was construed as clear harassment or workplace violence (yes, it could go that route - depending completely on his answers to him being interviewed).

I'm blathering on, if you have any questions, pm me your number and I can call you about this, I'm working on an important case right now and am not particularly concentrating on what I'm writing.

Well that's how I kind of feel as well... that's why I don't want to make a big fuss.
But I do feel offended.

What makes it hard... is that he's an older man... someone that I never expected to do such a thing.

I think I'll just crack a joke and just let him know I didn't appreciate it, and ask him not to do it again, then crack a joke to lighten the mood, as derek said.
thanks guys ;)

It was just a part-time job at HMV, so he wasn't really concerned with getting his job back.
