(old but still funny) Civic vs VR6

haha that rules...

*pets his VR6*

I would always laugh when driving back to Thornhill, and all these riceboys in their civics would want to race me on the DVP and Steeles...

No Chance!

exactly.
They think they're driving Skylines and shit. heh.
a CIVIC IS ONLY $20,000 NEW AT THE MOST, FOR A REASON.

What bothers me is that they think vtec is t3h aw3som3.
the VTEC engine configuration is older than dirt and has never accomplished any real performance, hence it's placement in economy cars.

The civic is pretty much fucking toast as soon as the Mazda3 becomes widely available.

My 98 V-6 Jetta has a surprising power. More than I planned on in fact.

It came with a spoiler too!

Maybe I should grow a set and do some street racing.

:D

Mazda is doing some very impressive things lately. The Mazda 3 is a great looking car.. hopefully the build quality and reliability will be the same as the Civic. The GT model is not cheap though.. $23K base plus options.

For what it's meant for (great commuter, solidly built, reliable, with a nice bit of zip), the Civic Si is a great car. I traded in my 99 Cavalier Z24 and got a 2003 Si.. I love the car.

the Mazda 3 is based on a platform partnership with Ford Europe and Volvo. Their equivalents are the new Focus which we wont see until 2006/7 and the Volvo S40, which we will see about march/april time here.

I should've said more common than widely available.

the Mazda 3 and 6 are both amazing cars. So damn sexy/sporty, it hurts. Nissan's been doing a good job too. Toyota and Honda have a lot of catching up to do. It's probably time that Honda killed the Civic.

Dude, Honda sells about 600,000 Civics a year. It's their best selling car by far, and has been one of the best selling cars in the world for years. Why the hell would they retire it??

cause it sucks!
heh.
the design is due for heavy revision... that's all i'm saying.

Ford's best selling car was the Escort... they retired it, and brought out the Focus.

GM has the cavalier, a rather successful line, but one that has gone through 2 heavy revisions since it's inception.

Dodge.... holy fuck... they've gone through more economy cars than anyone else... and each one has been better than it's predecessor.

I dunno.... i think i'm tangently comparing apples to oranges.

1) agreed on the apples and oranges
2) look at the civic since it's inception 20 years ago. you want to talk revisions?
3) honda just redesigned the whole car in 2001

Honda shoudl not retire the civic because people like you think it "sucks".

You are comparing a VR6 to a Civic? Hmm. let me see, I wonder what the price difference is. VW vs Honda is not an apples to apples comparison.

Dont tell me you think Dodge makes better cars than Honda.

Dont tell me you think the crapalier is even CLOSE to a honda.

Dont tell me you think that the mazda six is better than the accord.

Honda is using a simple formula: build a generic car that everybody will love, and build it for a cheap price, but dont skimp on quality. Thats why theyre better than Gm and Ford. The build quality of a focus is Garbaggggio!

Anyways. this is a stupid comparison is all Im saying.

Yep and will be retired next year, replaced by the Chevy Cobalt

The Grand Am will be replaced w/ the G6 which is gonna be a sweet car imo.. one option will be 250-275HP range, AWD, maybe turbo option too....

Chevy Cobalt?
I've read that it's not even close to the performance standard of the Cavalier.
I haven't seen anything about a Grand Am replacement though... are they replacing the Grand Prix too?

SRT/4. <== explain that.

Let me guess... You drive a Honda?

Cause there is no way in this world that an accord is better then a Mazda6.

What does everyone think of the Sentra Spec-V?

I went to go buy an Altima last night and I saw this nice yellow Sentra spec-V with the Brembo package for a hell of a lot less then the Altima I was looking at. I took it for a test drive and it is very quick. Although it needs an aftermarket Turbo(anyone know where I can find one?). I think I am going to buy it instead of the Altima now. It is a lot cheaper and a car that suits me more. (except it is a little small for a big guy like myself)

The NSX isn't very quick though. It handles like an Indy car though.

Shawn<-----used to drive one regularly.

its still a pretty new car. time will tell how reliable it is over a long period of time. if it turns out anywhere even close to being as reliable as a neon, its in deeeep doodoo... (i doubt it'll be that bad, though. got a nice turbo)

also, note: the car costs $26,950 (msrp). its a great buy for what you get, but it's still quite a bit more than a civic...

Huh? What about every major automotive publication's 2003 vehicle ranking articles? But what do they know. :)

Very good performance for the money, not overly attractive (especially from the back), slightly cheesy interior. But I would have very seriously considered buying one if they made a coupe version.

Every Import manufacture has their own version of variable valve timming and lift.

VTECH means nothing anymore

Unless its on a Noth American car, that would mean there finally caught up to the 90's in engine design

FUCK. enough with this srt/4 bullshit. A beefed up dodge with a HISTORY of build and reliability problems is not the do all and end all to this argument. So what, it has 230hp. BIG FUCKING DEAL.

I dont drive a Honda, and I never will, I just think that they are slogged for no reason. Compraing it to a VR6 is what retards do. Different cars/ different philosophies between the 2 companies.

The Sentra se-r vspec is a great car for the price, lowest priced car with brembo brakes, but I think the back is ugly as shit and hell, I think the front is ugly as an assface so I wouldnt buy it based on esthetics.

I think the accord is better than the mazda six if you look at everything at once. The mazda six looks better but has less power and supposed worse build quality.

i'd look more closely at the mazda3 GT. sure the spec-v claims to be 175hp and 180lb torque, but i bet the numbers are closer to the GT (160/150) at the wheel. the prices are almost identical (although i'd dish out the extra grand on the GFX package for the 3).

the GT looks better, probably handles better, is probably a bit more reliable and i'd put my money on it having a better resale value in the future.

i love my spec-v, but i think its already fallen behind the competition.

I have a Mazda Protege 5 that i bought last August and have pounded 45,000km onto quite quickly. The build quality is incredible for a $25,000 car (air conditioning, sunroof etc) and when I compare it to my friend's Civic that was bought at the same time but has 1/3 the mileage I am very impressed by how mine has held out.

The exterior paint and panels are the biggest thing I notice - no paint chips, dings or blemishes. The dashboard plastic and the seat fabrics still look brand new. The Civic's engine sounds quieter than mine does but she really maintains her car too and I just don't think it keeps its new look as long as the Mazda's that I have seen.

Honda has always had a great resale but they haven't held up so great this past year. The dealership is offering me $16,000 for mine right now and said I could sell it for about $19,000 privately - not too bad at all.

I will most likely be upgrading to the Mazda3 but I want to see them on the road for a couple months before I do anything. If they are built at the same quality as the Protege 5 then they're great.

i think it exceeds 220hp at the wheel! this thing is easily beefed up, too. its a tuner's dream.

5.4 0-60mph stock! that's an M3's time (at 333hp!)!

seems a big deal to me!

An argument brewing in a car thread on Tribe? What are the chances?

I say this everytime though: there is MUCH more to a car than just numbers. And even the numbers can't always be compared directly.

Cheers ... Ian :)
