Been a while since I've had the chance to post the second volume of my supposedly weekly reviews... Just to start things off right lets get this killer reissue out of the way right now:
ALIENS DON'T BOOGIE : THOR _ [ MISSLE ]
-- Originally pressed on Icelands own Thule records one of Thor's premier releases that has been championed by Richie Hawtin on DEFX909. Dark cavernous stabs, mashed in reverb put to a shuffle. I've been on the hunt for this record since its initial release, if you get a chance listen to the rest of the tracks on the initial Thule, minimal destroyers. Oh yeah there's a Mr. G remix too, not bad.
SOUNDSTREAM : 001 _[ SOUNDSTREAM ]
-- Deep in the heart of Germany sits the record shop techno dreams are fulfilled at HARDWAX. Hardwax employees Errorsmith and Soundhack have been putting out some sick techno on the virtually unknown labels SoundHack, SoundStream, Pom Pom & MMM. The SoundStream label represents the more funk driven side of the duo, showcasing some melodic disco basslines and some killer drum programming. The tracks all move so sublimely, perfect tools to chill them out without putting them to sleep.
ANTON KUBIKOV & MAXIM MILUTENKO
: MUSIC FOR CURRYDOORS vol. 1 & 2 _[ TRAUM ]
--Traum has caused me to really turn my head of late. With artists like Process, Miss Dinky, Fairmont, Tomas Jirku, and more than a handful of others, Traum is turning out some of the dopest minimal around. This two EP collection showcases the mood enhancing talents of Anton and Maxim. Highly emotive, and evolving song structures. Some of these tracks would chill the dancefloor out so much people would be shivering. Unbelieveably good music.
MATTHEW HERBERT : 5 DAYS :_[ SOUNDSLIKE ]
--One song out of a very f*cked up 4 track various artists EP on Soundslike. Herbert's track rocks it as he takes a heavy Radioboy style approach to straight techno. Wonky techno soundz with a very jackin beat. Also Featuring a smashed Rhodes piano and a vacuum cleaner. The rest of the EP is full of surf rock [ I AM ROBOT ], bunker-style electro [ 8 BIT CONSTRUCTION SET ], and some defunkt SI BEGG tune that jest begs the question WHAT THE F*CK ??
Also picked up a bunch of crazy early 80's reggae records on the Wackies label. Superb stuff, somehow distributed solely by Hardwax?? Lots of Kompakt pop ambient stuff, and the new Sutekh album on Mille Plateaux. All in all a very crazy record buying week.
Cheers
