Oakenfold "only spins breaks"

I just read this on the nubreaks.com message board - the original source being an interview that Adam Freeland did with Okie.

Apparently, Oakenfold "only spins breaks" now. What the heck is up with that? I know he occasionally tosses a breaks track into his trance sets, but this is just a different story altogether. Why the drastic change, I wonder? I can think of reasons why it'll be good for the breaks scene, but it could (and will) also negatively affect the breakbeat camp.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure what to make of it. I didn't see it coming, that's for sure! But, he has been releasing breaks records on his label, Perfecto, recently, and as well, he produced some breaks tracks for the Swordfish soundtrack.

All the big guys are starting to work breaks into their shit. Even the drum and bass producers are starting to come around. All except 2 of MUZIK's top 10 dj's said that breaks is gonna be the next big ting. The problem is you can spin house and trance and all that shit with your arms broken and your head up your ass. It's way easier to mix with bass than trying to match treble hits with bass on top of eachother... So all these big huge names are picking up breaks and are sucking ass. I had a feeling this would happen... they've been hating on big beat for so long they needed to show some love to breaks and when they did they finally realized what a fucking dope genre it was... no they all want a piece of the action cause none of the really big guys are playing it. Too bad they'll all suck from too many years of spinning pots and pans techno shite

oakenfold is a fuckin Goof, he's the shittiest dj i have ever seen. I'm not one to dis ANY dj but this guy is a fuckin over payed, no skill, mainstream piece of shit.

He's spinning breaks cuz breaks seem to tbe the cool thing right now.

Like I mentioned on the nubreaks board that he used to spin breaks, DnB way back, he even produced/remixed tracks with breaks on them years ago, even recently, like Madhatter mentioned.
So this isn't really new to him.

As far as Oakenfold getting full force on breaks, I highly doubt it.

And he get paid huge shit amount of money to spin a set.
That, I agree, is too much....

Oakie sucked now, in the past, he spun a lot of good shit.
I hope people are not jumping into the bandwagon calling Oakie names when he has actually done his part pushing the scene in the past.

I thought his DnB set on Oslo CD was excellent, very different, fusing it with house & trance.
His goa Fluoro CD was unique, one of a kind, a timeless piece of classic.

Of course, now is a dfferent story.

He's a no talent bitch ... who got popular by selling his name ... not by his talent
The only problem I can see coming out of this is some of the people it might turn on to the breaks scene ... if I see a gino wearing leather pants, a wife beater (or fish net shirt), with glow sticks attached to strings and a soother in his mouth at a breaks party ... It all stems from an intervierw that Oakey did in the last issue of Rolling Stone. He said that he only spins breaks now and that trance is dead. (which couldn't be more true-I have a hard time comprehending why it was ever "alive")

So in the latest issue of Muzik... Freeland challenges Oakey to spin two breaks records successfully!

I think that Oakey is a good dj as far as progressive and trance goes. But he sold out he is a ego driven dj. He plays for the masses and what they want to hear, or what he thinks the large number of them want to here. So my theory is that the reason Paul Oakey is "only spinning breaks", is because there is a whole breakbeat phenomenon going on as we speak. (You all know that it is happening). Paul is trying to ride the wave, so to speak, and squeeze every last once of the beatz because he knows that it is coming back again. The beatz never died, but they are definitely in our faces. As for London and the UK, Paul Oakey knows that dj's such as Adam Freeland, Hyper, Plum dj's, etc. are getting mad props now, so he is trying to feed of that energy and jump on the wagon. Although, he is used to playing the "HIGHNRG TRance-core....whatever..." that he cannot match a phat beat if his life depended on it.

I'd have to disagree with you there
I'd bet my life svaings ... the whole $4.16 ... that Oakenfold has very little say in his new "transition" into breaks
The people and executives he sold out to probablly see this new wave of breakbeat popularity and want thier dj to be "cool" and down with the "underground"
So they call him up and tell him he no longer spins trance and that starting the next day he will only be spinning breaks

I think Oakie deserves more credit than some people are giving him here. He is not that bad a DJ. I've heard quite a few of his sets (my roommates a few years ago loved oakie). And sure, his sets are boring and he only mixes the first 32 beats are channel 1 with the last 32 beats of channel 2, but I've never heard him botch a mix. And yes. The opening 30 minutes of the oslo set is some sick drum and bass... well mixed, to boot.

His decision could help get breaks in the main room at parties/clubs. However, it just seems so phoney to me. Trance is his thing... It's what he loves. Yet, he's vearing away from it because the money ain't there any more. The fact that he is solely influenced by the almighty dollar is just sad. Hence, Oakenfold is a sell out, no matter what he's spinning.

That said, I think I'd still go check out an Oakenfold set if he came to Toronto... I'd be interested to see what he throws down.
