Now Porter wants an even longer runway than first proposed at Toronto Island airport

^^ agree that Toronto is not a world class city.

It could easily be a world class city (its an awesome place with very strong points running for it) but its citizenry holds it back.

The Porter airport, the parkdale resto ban, 2 am last call, not getting our act together on the waterfront, bike lanes, no alcohol on the street for festivals and so on. Until Torontonians can get out of their small town mindset, we will never be a world class city. Its really unfortunate and depressing, because its my favorite city in the world.

Porter is awesome. It makes our city stronger. Sure the CEO is a bit slimy, but so what, you need to be a special character to massage five different levels of permitting and government.

A friend has a condo at Tip Top (one of the original buyers, so was there pre-Porter), its just white noise, and he's totally used to it, and guess what, he uses Porter all the time as its a 5 minute walk for him!

The Island and Hanlan's point are both great, and after being at Hanlan's five times this summer, its still a very enjoyable day out. With or without the extension. What the island needs is a massive revamp in the ferry infrastructure. The lack of capacity and general disorganization of the ticket and scheduling process is a disgrace. Those boats and piers have not been changed since I was a baby (born in 82).

I still can't believe they took out the coin machines to purchase ferry tickets. I guess having 100m long cue lines is easier for the city than the cost of maintaining the machines.

Expert tip: check ticket booths on far right before lining up. Many of times I have lined up there with only 3 or 4 people in front of me, with a lineup of 100+ people for middle booths.

Or better yet, go to the inside booth office and buy 10 advance tickets at a time. You save 10% and they never expire so whenever you want to go to the island in the days ahead you just duck down the side and avoid the ticket booths completely.

Case and point, world class cities just have machines

Get rid of the ppl manning the booths and put the machines back in. Oh no, can't do that.. The union wouldn't approve..

^^ really? you think modernizing ticket taking operations (like every world class city already has) is somehow anti-labor?

Alexd - have you joined any community groups against the expansion.
I tried, and I even offered the nojetsto people free ad banners but they never got back to me, which seemed strange for a community group.

^ya but I bet Porter had to pay for their banners :p

d, maybe we can rectify this. I've contacted the NoJetsTO people.

That is a really informative piece. I had no idea that Porter could lose the deposits on the planes (a bonus IMO) if they don't buy them shortly. I wonder when that date is? It seems to me that Porter put all their eggs in one basket with this Jets on the island move - a huge gamble for them and not a smart move if they don't get the approvals in time.

i skimmed through it quickly. i got the impression that their non refundable deposit for the planes was due now. not that they'd already made the deposit and were going to lose it?

they delay is allowing the competition to chip away at Porter's market share.

nothing ever gets done in this town. no subways, no light rail, no water front development, no wind power, no casino, no convention centre, no canadian made jets.

why would it be a "bonus" for porter to lose deposits?

lol yeah its a real "bonus" that the independent airline providing quality service and competition to the "big two" in our airline industry here in canada could potentially lose what i would imagine to be millions of dollars.

would you consider them losing their deposits (if they had made them, octo is right they are still refundable) to be some sort of punishment for trying to fly jets?

I'm just trying to understand the thought process whereby an independent canadian company (which employs 1000+ people) losing that much money is seen as a good thing by anyone.

Porter Airlines has fully refundable deposits on the 12 CS100s it has ordered, which means the planes can be cancelled at any point without penalty, Mr. Deluce said. But if the city does give approval for Porter to push ahead with its plans, those deposits become non-refundable provided Bombardier delivers the planes to specification, he said.

Bombardier has given Porter until April to win approval for its plan. But David Tyerman, an aerospace and airline analyst at Canaccord Genuity, said it is unlikely that Bombardier would not extend the terms of their arrangement past April, in part, because the Montreal-based manufacturer has had so much trouble selling its new airplane.

I think he's just being realistic. Look at how retarded the TTC automated machines are, although that's not as much union-related as someone's-pocket-has-to-be-padded-related.

It is quite frustrating. Just imagine if someone had the foresight to even think of building out that DRL to go past university, and loop down on Bathurst or Spadina and terminate at the island airport. How'd that be for a transportation investment? How'd far you think it would get through the way this city plans?

What are you rambling on about?

The waterfront has had development going on for years (HTO Park, Sugar Beach, Sherbourne Commons, Corus, 3 Wave Decks) and has been undergoing a massive 2 year revitalization currently.

No casinos because the public didn't want them.

Subways extension in Scarborough being built

No light rail because Ford is a dickpole and killed transit city

Convention Center? Canadian made jets?

water front development is a patchwork of small projects that may or may not end up as cohesive waterfront.

no casino cause the public didn't want it? OBVIOUSLY. that's my point!

the subway is NOT currently being built

the transit city LRTs are NOT being built.

the convention facility would have been part of the casino development. that type of space downtown is needed and wanted by a lot of people.

bombardier is canadian.

so, shut your mouth. you should be banned for that spoiler in the GoT thread
