Now Porter wants an even longer runway than first proposed at Toronto Island airport

But first, the Toronto Island airport runway has to be extended 168 meters.

Shouldn't they have secured the runway extension before buying the jets from Bombardier? Or do they hope that City Hall will approve the runway extension since they have already bought the jets?

Mephisto should comment on this, as he is a pilot who flies into that airport all the time, but wouldn't a runway extension that long go way past Ontario place or into the harbor as far as the ferry terminal?

I don't think they would have placed the order without a wink and a nudge from all 3 levels of government to ensure the trilevel agreement can be amended. Plus, the CDN Gov't has put lots of incentives for anyone purchasing the C Series from Bombardier. This is a big manufacturing win for Quebec and Montreal specifically, especially if they full-fill the potential 30 plane order.

I would certainly hope they would NOT start flying jets out of the Island Airport. They could also be really expanding and start flying out of other locations.

So its a done deal then. There goes the serenity of Toronto Island. I knew there was some reason they were not replacing the dying trees on Hanlan's Point - an airport extension.

I hope they do. The new jets will allow travel from the island airport to Calgary, Vancouver, LA and Orlando. Way better option for down towers flying to those locations. No need to spend 50+ for an airport limo, no need for the $30 ticket for the train when its up an running.

Porter is a great success story and I'm very happy for them. Air Canada can go fly a kite!

the big dump will create the extended run way. Plus with the new Casino at the door step of the island airport this is just HUGE!

Maybe they can build a bridge directly from the airport to the casino! Or a monorail even!

You can take the Airport express for the current subway fare; it is fairly easy and time effective to do.

[/LIST]news.jsp]Bombardier Commercial Aircraft News Centre - News Releases

The performance and environmental features of Bombardier's CSeries aircraft will not only strengthen our position as the leading operator at Bromma-Stockholm City Airport, but will allow us to expand our business throughout the region," said Geir Stormorken, Chairman, Braathens Aviation.

"Bromma, being a city airport, has very strict noise regulations, as well as a short runway," said Knut Solberg, Chief Executive Officer, Braathens Aviation. "We have been very focused on noise, emissions, fuel consumption and runway performance in our decision for a new aircraft type. With the CSeries aircraft, we found exactly what we were looking for. The CSeries aircraft promise excellent runway performance, noise levels which are less than half those of any similarly-sized aircraft currently in production, as well as unsurpassed environmental credentials. We think that the CSeries family of aircraft is a 'game-changer' in the context of the environment and performance, and we are very excited about introducing the CSeries jetliners to our passengers."

"Time Effective" - define what that means. I can leave my house in the west end and be on a plane at Porter within an hour. That simply isn't possible at Pearson.

i agree. good for bombardier too. they've been working on that jet for a while. my buddy works at bombardier and they're pretty excited about it.

that being said. i don't know how much of a nuissance it is to the area residents. frankly i don't care. i lived near pearson for 10 years. you get used to it.

if they don't have a handshake agreement for a runway extension and persmission to fly jets it's ok.

they'll probably say "well if we don't get approval then we won't buy the jets, x many jobs and x amount of money that bombardier won't get"

and if they don't get an agreement, then i don't care either. people can take the train to pearson.

i just realised that the traffic chaos around a couple of west end rail underpasses are due to that rail line construction.

Anytime I've been down to the island airport (3-4 times a year), I'm always impressed at how much of a thriving business it is since Porter arrived. Just amazing. Definitely a good idea to expand service.

Our Institute has been working diligently with Bombardier and other aircraft manufactures over the past 10 years in an effort to lower the acoustic levels coming off aircraft. I am not the engineer so I will not fake explaining this but what I can say it these jets will be much quieter than most are expecting. I can confirm this because bombardier and Pratt and Whitney have given us hundreds of thousands of dollars to research the acoustics coming off aircraft. One of our students just did some amazing research on landing gear and he is about to become a millionaire based on his research.

Take a look at this overhead of the airport. See the scale at the bottom left hand corner. You'll see that 168m isn't too much, especially when you consider that distance would be split across both ends of the runway.

The fact that jets are quiet isn't going to do anything for the argument. Although I'd be interested in knowing how much louder they are than the turbo prop planes that are flying in and out of there now.

The anti-island airport people are going to fight this long and hard. Adam Vaughan will be leading the charge on it. He's already labelled Porter as an airline for entitled elites which is nonsense because the last time I was at the airport earlier this year I almost took a picture of the lineup of people waiting for the ferry to send to Vaughan to show him that these are just regular people like you'd see in any airport. I doubt he's has ever even flown Porter out of his principal of hating the airline.

But if the airline couldn't get a bridge built, which ironically would have greatly improved on the mess of traffic that Vaughan is now fighting, the chances of the runway being extended I say is very slight.

I would be happier with a direct high speed rail link to Pearson from downtown. We should have had this 30 years ago already.

umm..the airport express is $25.60 one way. thats with a 5% online discount. it also takes like 15 years to make it through downtown traffic once you get off the gardiner. if you're taking it to one of the later hotels it can take as long to get from the gardiner to the hotel as it took to get from pearson to downtown.

We are getting this for the Pan Am games.

I suspect Porter's backup plan if they can't get the island airport expanded will be to fly their jets out of Pearson. Or perhaps they could have their jet hub be out of Ottawa or Montreal and if we Torontonians want to fly to Vancouver we'd have to connect through either of these cities. Which could still possibly take less time than flying from Pearson.

1. If we had had decent high-speed transit to Pearson ages ago as we should have, this whole Island Airport thing wouldn't even be an issue.

2. Having recently flown American Airlines transatlantic, I can say that Air Canada, from a passenger perspective, is a good airline.

3. The Ford brothers should build a medium-sized airport (or expand Buttonville or something) and put a casino in it. That would address any funding issues ;)

forget the tranist time to YYZ (for me BB is the better bet though), it's getting through security at Billy Bishop that takes the cake.

for business travel to locations serviced out of BB, it's dream compared to pearson, even with my nexus pass.

i'm all of the expanding billy bishop. i see more opportunity than an eyesore.

and buttonville is too far for downtown business travel, may as well go to pearson.
