The Giants should never have put themselves in that position anyway, so they deserve to lose ! :p

Pass interference
NFL officials missed call late in Giants-49ers game

NEW YORK (AP) - The San Francisco 49ers' 24-point comeback victory over the New York Giants ended with an officiating error. The NFL said Monday that pass interference should have been called against the 49ers on the final play of the 39-38 thriller. A botched field-goal attempt by the Giants ended Sunday's game, when New York was called for having an ineligible receiver downfield while holder Matt Allen attempted a pass.
However, the league said that the pass interference that was ignored would have resulted in a replay of the down.

After a videotape review of the 41-yard attempt with six seconds left, NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira determined:

- The Giants' Tam Hopkins, No. 65, lined up as the left guard and was illegally downfield on the pass. All three flags thrown by the officials were for that penalty.

- Rich Seubert, No. 69 and normally a guard, lined up as an eligible receiver on the play. He reported to the officiating crew before the game that he would man that position on field goals.

- 49ers defensive end Chike Okeafor interfered with Seubert when he was attempting to catch Allen's pass. No defensive pass interference penalty was called.

"If defensive pass interference had been called," an NFL statement explained, "there would have been offsetting penalties (ineligible receiver against the Giants and pass interference against the 49ers), with the down replayed at the original line of scrimmage, the San Francisco 23-yard line. Although time had expired, a game cannot end with offsetting penalties. Thus, the game would have been extended by one untimed down."

Allen could not have spiked the botched snap, because it was a long snap. Pereira said the only time a player can spike the ball is when he takes the ball directly from the center.

Matt Bryant lined up to try the potential game-winning field goal, and the snap from newly signed Trey Junkin was in the dirt. Allen fumbled the ball, then made the desperation pass downfield to Seubert.

Fox commentator Cris Collinsworth said during the broadcast that, because it was third down, Allen could have spiked the ball, giving the Giants another chance at a kick. Afterward, on the Fox postgame show, other commentators agreed.

Pereira said the only other option would have been to throw to an eligible receiver.

that's not exactly true. if the holder spiked the ball, it would have been a penalty and the giants would STILL have had an opportunity to kick a field goal, albeit from 10-15 yards farther back.

the holder SHOULD have thrown past the line of scrimmage. that would have been an incomplete pass and the giants would have had another try at the field goal from the same distance.

as for the result of the game, it ended like it should have ended. if they allowed the giants another try at the field goal, it would have created a situation where the giants would be in a BETTER position than they would have been had their ineligible receiver actually caught the ball and ran into the endzone.

ps. 49ers kick ass. :)

pps. michael strahan lost the game for the giants when he taunted terrell owens by telling him to "look at the scoreboard".

ppps. take that shockey, you bitch.

Actually the game would end on an offensive penalty, it just can't end on a defensive penalty or an offsetting penalty

I'd be so pissed if I were a Giants fan ... although did you see the kicker shank that last field goal attempt? My money would have been on him not making it anyhow.

nonono, the point of saying that the holder should have spiked the ball or thrown a quick incomplete pass is that it would have stopped the clock. there were still a few seconds left when he decided to make that hail mary pass.

aren't there any other monday (or tuesday) morning quarterbacks out there to help us beat this point to death? i mean, half the fun of watching football is talking about it like we could have done a better job ourselves. :p

the giants suck...they blew a big lead & the fact that it came down to this call is really irrelevant...but who was really watching this game anyways, as the canadian juniors were on :)

good article in the Globe & Mail today outlining the officials decision & the apology from the NFL...

Didnt read the thread, but Ahmad Plummer intercepted a pass 2 plays before and it was called back. Plummer played a disgusting game as it is, so did the Giants D, so I agree that they dont deserve to win regardless. EVEN IF the play was re-played, the G-men's kicker sucks ass anyways, so he would ve botched it. You cant fuck with destiny.

Whats up with Bill Walsh calling Garcia on par with Young and Montana? First ever playoff win at 32 makes not you that good.

^^^ sugar d - what i wrote is true. the officials meant that a kick-holder cannot spike the ball without getting a penalty. my point was that he *could* have spiked the ball, taken the penalty, stopped the clock and kicked again from farther away.

as for superbowl.com - i was all over that site when it first started. in its first year, they had the best chatroom - did anyone else here participate in it? my nicknames were "the canadian" and "julie the stripper".

(chatrooms were pretty new back then and i wanted to see how fast all the guys would pounce on someone they thought was a stripper.)

don't foget all his success in the CFL...warren moon didn't arrive in the NFL until after many succssful years with the Eskimos...

garcia still may have 6 or 7 good years left...

jc

ps but a pretty tall comparison...

Why is there so much hatred for the Giants on this board ?

I'm not really a huge fan per se, but they have some good talent on that team.

I wonder if that guy who botched the snap feels as bad as Scott Norwood ? ;)

it is cool to hate New York now.

my GB and Miami both fucked the dog this year so i hope that the Jets beat Atlanta in the final.

If they couldn't make a 41 yarder on 3rd down with several ticks left, I've not much faith they'd nail a 56 yarder.

actually i think there would be a 10 second time run-off for the intentional grounding penalty, and the game would have been over.

the game is over and there is no way to overturn the decision now anyway. The Giants can bitch all they want but they should have never put themselves in that position... they were up by 24 points!

who cares, the game is done and over with....you can't do anything about it so just concentrate on next weeks picks.

That's what would have happened if he had spiked the ball instead of throwing it downfield to the ineligible reciever.

However the league is saying that the refs should have called pass interference on the db who mugged the 'ineligble' reciever. Then there would be two penalties would have cancelled each other out:

Ineligble reciever down field(offensive)
Pass interference(defensive)

and the Giants would have had another chance at the 46 yarder.

If the kicker had spiked the ball, then there would have been 2 offensive penalties:

1) intentional grounding
2) ineligible reciever downfield(obviously there would have been no need to interfere with the ineligible reciever since the ball wasn't coming his way). The game would have been over.

The Giants should never have let it come to that. What a performance by Garcia. He ran that offense for almost 2 quarters and rang up the score.

stanimal and fleaflo - there is a 10 second run-off for intentional grounding? and a game can END with the run-off?

is this mentioned in any of the articles or are you basing this on memory of a past game?

what if the holder had scrambled and then threw past the line of scrimmage? the regular rule says that as long as the QB gets out of the pocket and throws past the line of scrimmage, it would be an incomplete pass. but there is no "pocket" during a field goal attempt, so what would happen?

does anyone know if the NFL rules are available online anywhere?
