your thoughts on where neksis has gone? some of you may have had an eye on the fledgling magazine slash web site for the past year and whatever... now they've got five issues out the door and a brand new [shitty slashcode knockoff] website. what do you think of it all? *

* disclaimer: i don't work for them... i don't even like them. in fact, i think the mag stinks - it's a pathetic vice ripoff and they continually shaft the people that support them. the whole thing seems to be funded by the editor's rich daddy and their pretencious declarations of whats cool (coke) and what isnt (everything else) are lame and absurd. fuck them.

signed,
stirrinup trubble

PS: if anyone actually likes the content in their new issues can someone please explain WHY? and also what is believable about an elementary school where the grade fours do acid on their lunch hour and are alcoholic know-nothings by grade five... *cough*wannabes!*cough*

kodos - is that "stirrinup trubble" bit yours or did you paste a letter that someone else wrote? just curious.

is chris shulgan still the editor? we've disagreed on stuff before but he seems like a straight shooter. don't really know about the rest of the people.

i thought you, stargurl aimee and starr all worked for neksis.

I used to write for them and still do, occasionally (haven't in a while, but i've got a few interviews set up). I think it's improved drastically since their first issue - the layout and look is much more professional. Content-wise, I don't really see what you're complaining about...interesting content is interesting content. Yes, I do find reading about 'Toronto's Only Pigeon Racer' entertaining (how to hell do you find these kind of absurd things anyways?)...we're a strange generation of people, with strange tastes. Vibe rip-off? Is Vibe now the only magazine on the market that is 'allowed' to have off-kilter ideas and content? I find Neksis to be a bit more informative, rather than a totally piss-take (not that I don't enjoy reading a piss-take - that's funny shit, but not really informative).

As for 'rich-daddy' funding, you're dead wrong. The editor funds it out of his own pocket and hustles his ass for people to buy adspace which also helps pay for it. He hustles his ass, period. Just like Alexd does to put out his mag. He has a full time job too. Personally, i feel that anyone who works their ass off to pursue their passion while ALSO working to survive in the real world, deserves my respect. That's TWO full-time jobs, because he loves what he does and is striving towards a future.
All the more power to him.

I've read a few copies of that mag, but haven't in a while because what I did read was garbage. I stand by my opinion of that mag when it first came out, that it's a try-hard Vice wannabe with nothing to back it up.

Crap articles that stick out in my mind:
Their giude to 3 days.
Going to the Symphony on e.
first time on k.
having sex with ginos at the Guvernment on e.

If they didn't overdo the "drugs are so cool" angle then I might be inclined to read another copy. But everytime I picked up their magazine all I could picture was a bunch of 17-year old candykids/thugs sitting around a table trying to think of how they can impress their friends. It's probably a far cry from what the writers/editors are really like but that's the impression that I receive when I read that mag.

what i have read in neksis has amused me. i laughed my ass off at the gino sex article. it's not like these things don't happen.

but i am not blind to the really negative perception of the scene and influence that the mag could have on youth...

its easy to manipulate your audience into writing for you because everyone wants to feel needed....
i mean- hey... you save lots of money from hiring a real staff.

Perhaps, but it's not like I'm not getting anything out of it in return - I get advance cd's for cd reviews, i get to meet interesting people, schmooze with name dj's and it all goes on my bio & resume....which get me paying gigs/jobs.

The bottom line is that I want to be involved in this scene as many ways as I can - not for the $ (I can't live on sheckles!) but because I love this community and it's given me tremendous, life-changing memories and mentalities.

I think being involved is better than standing on the sidelines as an observer.

vice has fallen off the rocker aswell

neksis, vice, etc etc all these pop culture magazines are getting old. the one i like is dojo and trucker but its harder to find them. whats the deal with vice now anyways. it used to be so funny and obnoxious now all they do is see how stupid they can all get. the stupider the better. neksis, its a cool magazine to read while on the bus or something but thats all. at least its small you can put it in your inside coat pocket. rambling....

i just picked up a copy of neksis, dojo, and vice. i only had a chance to flip through each of them, and yes, i found neksis and dojo to be knock offs of vice, but seeing as vice has become more of an american magazine (imo) i think it's great that there are similar magazines that are more immediate for us torontonians. come on, you've got to agree, reading an article about our very own guvernment is amusing.

i also agree that dojo is a better mag, but it looks more established. i'm sure neksis will improve as it continues and as people continue to criticize it. hey, getting criticism is the first step.

The Vice article on photography of 1st time drug users was the funniest thing i have ever read in a magazine..

And a great example of where vice is, and where neksis needs to be if they are going to be successful..

Not that im saying they wont...

They are still learning..
