Native History in Canada

A friend and I are having a small discussion on native history in Canada and we've come to a road block, but only because we don't know a lot about the subject, so here is my question to Tribe:

What role did Conservative governments have in land treaties, shady deals or poor treatment of the natives in Canada?

Thanks for the help.

I mean the Conservatives specifically.... You see, we have a general idea of how the natives got screwed (in my opinion) but we're wondering how certain governments contributed to this.

For example, was it only the Liberals that gave them shitty deals or was it both Liberals and Conservatives or what?

that's not a light question. Government as we know it wasn't quite the same back then...

are you writing a paper or something? I'm sure there's historical material out there on this stuff.

I recall hearing lately that natives only just got the vote in 1960. When I heard that I came to the conclusion that natives were living in a country they had no say in. They were treated like a cross between children and criminals - two other types of people who don't get the vote.

Based on that I would say that natives have been either screwed over or ignored by political leaders of every party and outlook as that seems to be the status quo of the time.

Well, you have to remember that the Native-screwing process happened long before there was any government here to be conservative or otherwise. There were English colonies and French colonies both ostensibly extensions of their respective monarchies, that both indulged heavily in redskin screwing, setting the standard for all history since. Before there where Grits and Whigs there was imperialism!

It seems the swillster has yet to see this thread? One would think he'd be goin' apeshit in here.

No paper, just a discussion with a few friends. And sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm not so much talking about way back when the colonies were in Canada and people were canoeing around Hudson Bay shooting beavers, I'm talking more about in the last 75 years. Actually, the more recent the better.

Things like, who pushed for allowing natives to vote? Or has pushed to honor treaties, or give them back their land, things like that.

I'm going to the library now to find out more.

Library's a good start, I wouldn't want to rely on Tribe for something like that. :p Unless swilly has something to add.

If you want to talk about a serious fuck job to the native people of Canada, 2 words:

Residential Schools

I vote it the worst thing short of the old school maneuver of small pox infected bed sheets being placed in camps to kill everyone.

I can't even get started on all the shit they've been put through, it makes my heart hurt.

:(
