Erik Bacic:
"Andrew Spence has been wanting to phase out the Dj Slim persona for quite sometime. I never really understood why you would want to change a name that a strong reputation has been built on, but after using dj search engines over the internet and realising just how many people have bitten the Dj Slim name across the continent, its understandable. Hell, some guy even bit his name on Audiogalaxy for his Hot Shit mix from 1996, except it wasn't Andrew and it wasn't breaks. Andrew was an original Slim almost ten years ago, but now you can probably find one in every major city. By using his real name, he will never have to worry about people biting it and therefore he makes his own distinction.
Andrew has also gone through many changes in the last year or so. His style has become increasingly progressive combining all forms of breaks, house, techno, and drum & bass, into one set. The addition of the live tenor saxophone is something brand new to the breaks scene, but heralds to his youth when he was only known as Andrew. I don't blame Andrew for wanting the name change, this is his right to do so, in fact I think it takes a serious amount of courage and confidence in one's talents to be able to discard a name that he was known by for years. By the time Si Begg retires he will probably have over 50 names for each and every style the genius can come up with.
In the end Dj Slim will never be gone, everyone will remember the first time they heard him play, his sick scratching that made all of our jaw's drop. A new name for a new era. And besides how hard was it to figure out that it was Slim on the Renaissance/Backbreakers flyer? How hard will it be for everyone to know Angus when they see his name on a flyer?
I don't think anyone should have a problem with Angus wanting to use his real name. I'm sure he has many reasons that have lead to this. The Breaks scene has finally let in the progressive and nu skool sounds in Ontario, we fought a fierce battle for acceptance, filled with multiple arguements on Tribe, but breaks are breaks and change happens all the time in life, its a natural order of progression. A name means something different to every individual that reads it and more importantly those that hold it. If Angus Robinson means more to him now than Madhatter, my opinion is that everyone should support him and the right to be known as he sees fit.
Me, I am looking forward to hearing the debut of Angus Robinson, I heard he can drop an ill beat that gets any dancefloor humming"
