Just bought a sweet MD player, this thing fucking ROCKS
I can record up to 160 minutes of music to an 80 minute MD w/ Sony's MDLP compression, w/ no noticeable loss of sound quality.
I can transfer music via USB @ 32x speed from my PC to the MD.
wheee!
anyone else get anything cool w/ their tax refund?

I don;t know anything about MD players. But, wouldn't a mp3 player be better? Unless of course you have a mac.

MD's Rock!!!

I've had my mini-disc recorder for about 2 years now & I can honestly say it is the best toy I ever bought! Mine doesn't do compressions like the new ones .. however it does come with a special attachment so I can download MP3's as it converts them to real music files on my mini-disc & records them!

Its great for making CD's as I just hook it straight into my mixer & presto - digital quality and then when I want to record to CD from minidisc there is an optical cable which then records it again in digital quality! All this .. in the palm of my hand!

Think one of the other great features is that you can track mark, track list, move tracks, delete tracks at anytime! :)

This TOY ROCKS!! You gotta get one!

What bitrate do they use to calculate 160min.?

i've ripped discs off of MP3's I had encoded @ 192 Kbps, at the 2x compression, and they sound exactly the same as the originals. I haven't yet tried ripping a CD straight over to MD, but from my experience, and reading various reviews on this model, the loss of sound quality is negligible.
I'm not sure what the bitrate is for encoding on these discs -- it may say in the link to the specs. I included in my original post
