Music recommendations for my restaurant/bar

The title says it all.
here's a sample of what I like to play and we'll go from there...

During dinner, I usually play 'nice' jazz nothing to crazy, Thelonious Monk & John coltrane live in NY, Kruder & dorfmiester, Abdulah Ibrahim, Sufjan Stevens, Feist, Miles, I have a few good jazzy mixes, and some random jazz.

I play a wide variety of stuff after dinner...Some indie bands...metric, arcade fire, Spoon, bloc pary etc...lots of deep house or any other mix that isnt ultra ravey for lack of a better term....or whatever else tickles my fancy. Anyways, just looking for some fresh stuff to check out...So, if you were enjoying some tapas and wine in Stratford, what would you like to listen to?

I'd keep it downtempo and trip-hoppy without too many lyrics. If you play a lot of rock music with vocals, people will think they're at Jack Astors. Good call on the Kruder and Dorfmeister...I could be wrong but the last time we were at Canoe they were playing a K + D mix.

Try some of that 'barely there' downtempo like Nightmares on Wax.

Some hiphoppish instrumentals are always good to listen to. Some have that jazzy sound to them and some have a fairly melo beat and then there's others that have a more uptempo sound to them, but it's still not overwhelming.

thanks to grey's anatomy, i'm hooked on the postal service and tegan & sara, but i agree that little to no vocals is generally best for background music.

you should look into stuff done by ravin, he's the guy that does buddha bar. but he has other comps that are way better, siddharta (sp?) and dinner in paris, and a few others. they are quite good

and cesa evoria and sade are both awsome for dinner (and sex)

jojo flores' new release is fantastic.

its a double disc featuring a 'dinner' mix, and a 'dance' mix.

i believe it was actually made for a restaurant in mtl.

i forget what its called though.... global something. lol

tosca, and verve remixes would be good too.

second the tosca recommendation. also, try thievery corp's 'outternational sounds'. a little too much funk but can be good for later on in the evening?

Keep em coming...

I have pretty much every Thievery Corp, Tosca, Zero 7 album...what you guys are suggesting is good stuff! FYI, our wine bar menu and wines are simelar to JK's wine bar, as is the atmoshpere if that helps...

bargrooves 1 thru 8?

hotel costes?

these can be $$$ at hmv because they're imports, and I don't know what the deal is with playing music that's been burned, but, if you can, hear them out.

I just got hooked on these guys as well (as well as Death Cab for Cutie considering they have the same lead singer). LOVE them! Maybe not the best for back ground music because of the vocals, but not that bad considering they are kind of atmospheric sounding.

I find Slayer Unplugged to be a excellent dinner music.

Nothing like enjoying some veal medalions whilst the course to Reign On Blood is strummed soulfully on a flamenco guitar and the smashing drums relegated to subtle bongos.

Hey Dave, aside from the music discussion, I'd love to hear some more about your new place! Pics, menus, etc? I think as long as you don't tell us how to get there it won't be considered spammy ;) Seriously, would love to see how a tribe-influenced resto/bar looks!

edit: forgot to sign sarah out, this is Mark Rude1

I just wrote it now after taking a look through a cd binder and a few directories on my hard drive.

Dave, on the deeper side of things check out Late Night Alumni and Members only (two projects involving Kaskade and/or Kaskade's production partners), they get overlooked but have some absolutely beautiful songs (espescially LNA who have branched out beyond the house sound and do some pretty incredible ballad/dinner music). The typical Lazy Dog, St. Germain, and Cafe Del Mar compilations will do you well on the chill, deep, downtempo tip. Also, if you're just playing CDs, check out the Budha Bar series of compliations, a lot of eclectic tracks from across the globe that you won't hear anywhere else and would totally work for a tapas bar. Trying to keep the suggestions on the border of mainstream so you don't have to do too much work to get the music.
