Ok - i went in with zero expectations - and gotta say - the new Hellraiser this year (2022) -> fucking excellent. Not a rabid fan, probably watched one or two of them in sleepovers as a teen??

So also had no expecations on the mythos etc. But fuck me. This was a GREAT horror movie!

Holding a 6.1 on IMBD which for horrors, is actually an 8! lol

Holy fuck i had fun - Barbarian - what an amazing scare/thrill movie best watched with max volume and total darkness!

Did a double take when i saw the writer/director was one of the very fun ensemble behind Wrecked - a little known TV show I got a kick out of.

Barbarian chillin @ >90% rotten tomatoes and 7.5 @ IMDB which is like 8.5 for the genre lol

Decision To Leave - Chanwook Park's newest film is one of his most restrained - none of the gonzo, over the top, cringe inducing violence, nor the thick fog of raw carnal sexuality that some of his other films (The Handmaiden, for example) that often define his films. It's a murder mystery, so there is a bit of gore here and there, but the restraint he exercises really works well here, balancing out some of the more melodramatic moments that come with some Korean cinema and really helps this film define itself as a film noir, but with a sense of sincerity with the romance between the leads.

I'm not sure if it's his best work, but it certainly is unique, very memorable and maybe a play for an Oscar - he did win the best director prize at Cannes this year. I'd recommend it more for people who are a fan of Park's work, but can expect and appreciate the lack of frenzied, constantly building pressure cooker energy that his films usually embody.

The Triangle of Sadness is one of the more interesting movies I've seen recently - and kind of like porn for poli sci majors too as it is steeped in political allegory and the philosophy of class politics.

Excellent stuff, if a little long. Settle in - it's actually worth the length - for once lol

Saw Glass Onion last night. Think i liked it better than the first, still not entirely on board with southern american style Daniel Craig, but people might mention it in the same breath as Triangle of Sadness.

Triangle
is the better film with the deeper/more rewarding layers of philosophy but Glass is pretty good and is a different kind of movie with a different set of political targets which it skewers quite effectively. Loved the fake celebrity products in Glass Onion: Renners small batch hot sauce and Jared Leto's Hard Kombucha LOL

Gina Corano's newest movie "Terror On The Prarie" only made $13k at the box office.
She and Ben Shapiro are claiming they've been cancelled by the woke mob, which is why the movie bombed at the box office.
Never mind that the Daily Wire's own followers are not having a woman in the lead, killing white men. "Feminist propaganda" in the eyes of some of them.
One commenter put it best - Gina Corano turned down Disney throwing a mountain of money at her and instead decided to go with a crowd that will tell her to go back into the kitchen.

I look forward to her next blockbuster film with Kevin Sorbo and Rob Schnieder.

It's getting a Criterion release in May. I can't wait to pick it up and check out all the extras.

Air is maybe one of the best movies of the year so far. While some might dismiss this as a two hour ad for Nike and the Air Jordan brand, there is a lot more the film has to offer, and is probably one of Ben Affleck's best directed films to date. Unbelievably good soundtrack, a very immersive production design that feels like Mad Men in the 80's with a quasi-documentary take in how Air embraces the look of the offices, the technology and, in particular, some of the garish fashion and early Nike sportswear that was part of the era. Nike's tracksuits in the 80's were definitely.....something.

The only complaint I had was Ben Affleck playing Nike CEO Phil Knight - he looks nothing like him, doesn't even really talk or behave like him and the terrible wig or hair styling just looked awful, which took me out of the movie. Otherwise, the rest of the cast is nothing short of fantastic, including Marlon Wayans (!) giving the best performance of his career since Requiem For A Dream, in a small but pivotal role and Viola Davis playing Michael Jordan's mother, in what ought to be an Oscar worthy win for her. This is a very well done, superbly directed film worth seeing.

Wayans are on the up and up! Have to admit Damon Wayans entertains me well on Frogger

Extraction 2 - gotta admit I was entertained, *especially* during that 21-minute "continuous shot" (pretty sure it wasn't but boy did it FEEL like a continuous shot - amazing action!)

Fun times and better than the typical direct-to-streaming action flick. Also feels like John Wick influenced fight choreography. Even if the brightest points of the movie are technical i had a lot of fun!

Asteroid City is something of an odd beast. It's on one hand the most Wes Anderson of his own movies, but there's a much more meta element to the film - it's presented as a play that comes to life, but cuts back to the rehearsals and stories of how the casting of the play within the movie came to be. It still has the usual Wes Anderson calling cards - stellar cast, deadpan delivery, forced perspective shots galore and the whimsical, storytelling book visuals, but there's a bit of a Charlie Kaufman dip that goes on with it as well with the meta angle at play here.

I'm a Wes Anderson fan through and through, but I'm not sure how much I liked this. It's good, but not his best. The look of it kind of reminded me of Life Aquatic with Steve Sissou, but it's nothing like it. I need more time to think about it.
