A former singer with dance act Soul II Soul has died in a bizarre car accident that was triggered by an apparent shop-lifting.

The BBC reports that Doreen Waddell, 36, was approached by staff at a Tesco store in Shoreham, West Sussex, on Friday, on suspicion of shoplifting.

The singer fled through a back door and ran across the nearby A27 highway, where she was struck by three cars.

She died later in hospital. The BBC said goods from the Tesco, including children's items, were found strewn across the highway.

The singer, who provided lead vocals on Soul II Soul's 1989 hit album "Classics Volume I," had to be identified by fingerprints, the report said.

"this is a shame, keep on moving & back II life are timeless classics..."

They will always remind me of the black guy on Electric Circus. The one that always wore the ripped jeans/Tank top and cowboy hat.

i own their album with 'keep on movin' and 'back to life' on it. this is really sad. they had a very short, but very influential, career.

r.i.p.

:(

The first Soul II Soul album is an all time favorite with me. A very nice introduction to the UK hip-hop and Rnb scene, and with the Wild Bunch having their hands in it (Wild Bunch = some members of Massive Attack and Nellee Hooper - probably one of the best producers on the planet IMHO) only made it better. They've often been treated as a footnote in dance music, but I think (however unfortunate this case may be) that the death might bring some of their work to light.

From the Ministry of sadly, the best way to make a hit album and to make incredible sales is to die.
