Due to circumstances beyond our control The Nature Of Hope performance at the Mod Club on Friday October 14, 2005 with Odel Johnson, Boogiewall Soundsystem, Jah Beng, Treson, MC Carrie Mullings and has been cancelled.

The Nature of Hope show in Toronto was booked and confirmed with The Mod Club 6 weeks ago, and unbeknown to us The Mod Club just recently double-booked another show for the same date, promoted by tobacco giant Benson & Hedges Inc., also part investor in the Mod Club.

Benson & Hedges was unwilling to re-schedule their event, having had full knowledge of our confirmed booking.

We only received notice of cancellation yesterday (!) and it is hard for us to describe our extreme disappointment in the way the Mod Club Management and Benson & Hedges handled their business affairs, considering we were only informed by an independent 3rd party of the double booking 2 days before the show, and not even by the Mod Club itself.

We regret any inconvenience caused to people planning to attend and support our show, and especially those we weren't able to get in touch with in time but nevertheless will be making the trip down to the Mod Club today at their own expenses.

The world-wide live broadcast by the Internet's formeost Urban Radio Station etherbeat.com has also been cancelled.

Please direct any complaints directly to the

    Mod Club (416) 588-4663

    or the
    Rothman's Benson & Hedges corporate head office (416) 449-5525.

OHM GROWN Records is seeking compensation from the Mod Club and Benson & Hedges for costs incurred to the musicians, promoters, sponsors and our community that have been working hard for the last 6 weeks to make this show a reality.

i don't get why this press release is trying to make it seem like this is partly B&H's responsibility.
its the venue's responsibility for any double bookings.

I wonder if the promoters were left in the dark about it

It really sucks when venues pull this type of crap. From now on you need one thing: Contract.

We're only getting one side of the story. I'd be interested in hearing something from the other party.

whatever... it happens... i know many people that have done events at Mod Club and they have nothing but good things to say about them.

not too mention that the people doing the party tonight probably have a stronger relationship with Mod Club.

    dear ohmgrownrecords,

if you spend just a little bit of time protecting yourself from these occurrences (i.e. with a very simple contract, a letter/email of understanding or even an email from you to the club confirming details of your verbal agreement), you would never find yourself in this kind of unfortunate situation.

    yours very truly,
