I get so frustrated with all the political/police/supposed leaders of community/other stuff too, bullshit abuse of power...it just seems to get worse everyday. Since the majority of people supposedly vote for these people, I guess that means I hate over 50% of the people. But almost everyone I talk too feels the same way for the most part. What gives!

Any tips for how to not fret over this so much, or suggestions on where to move, that doesnt have so much crap. not that there isnt this everywhere. Scandinavia? New Zealand?

I'm getting stabby.

It has always been thus. Part of the social contract, and because like us the people in power are humans, they are not perfect.

Some of them are not terribly desirable as officials and people of power, but hey...I wouldn't want that public life...so I vote for someone else to do it for me.

It's not perfect, but I'm okay with it.

I know it's not much of a comfort, but it's far better there than other places.

I can't even place a fucking mail order here in Mongolia because I can't be certain it will even make it here / past customs / past anyone in the post office who wants it. And if do receive it, it gets held ransom at customs under the premise of duty owed, which is completely arbitrary depending on their mood and how foreign you look.

Which is pretty much indicative of how everything is run.

Sounds exactly like ups here in Canada, no?

While Canada Post certainly overcharges on their rates, it's not really the same.
Since I moved into this place a year ago, the only two packages sent to me didn't arrive. Well Canada Post said they were delivered.....

Now I have to tell the person sending to pay the extra for a signature.

I'd be even more worried now that they are dismantling home delivery, those workers aren't going to give a shit about doing their jobs.

Aside from your digesting the news on a day-to-day basis, how is all this affecting you, personally? Has the quality of your own life decreased in some noticeable manner as a result of the actions of these people?

First tip: Read/watch the news less often.

Interesting to say the least. Not to put a negative spin on Mongolia, but my friend recently road tripped thru the country before continuing on thru Eastern Russia and finally Japan. He had high expectations for his Mongolia portion... which were quickly dashed. First night near the Russia/Mongolia border, he was invited to stay in a Yurt with a seemingly nice family. They kept insisting on feeding him and showing him "hospitality". The next day, they held him hostage in the Yurt, forcing him to pay up for his stay with them and food. Later, the Yurt owner convinced my friend to try driving his car for a few minutes, and ended up crashing it into the Yurt and claiming damages. It turned into a total nightmare situation for him.

It didn't end. Rude locals, bar fight in Ulaanbaatar, corruption everywhere despite newly minted government wealth.... he was hugely disappointed by the culture. Said Ulaanbaatar was also a letdown. Nothing really special about the city and just a cesspool of bad traffic and many rude people (not everyone of course).

He ended up loving Japan though, which I was happy about since I live here.

This just in: People who live in less prosperous countries tend to act more desperately.

Obviously, shock and dismay are the only two appropriate reactions.

I lived in Zimbabwe during their biggest of problems when the land reform started. I was there for a year, so it wasn't a trip. We can go on forever about the problems that they went through... but I can for certain that it was one of the best times of my life.

I've never seen so many people be so happy with nothing. Almost stayed there for ever... you're definitely not just a number there!

Having that experience made me realize that shit we do have here!

Gunpoint? Knifepoint? Rubber chicken? Did he make any sort of offer to thank them for their hospitality prior to their requesting it?

You mean your friend foolishly decided to allow the person to drive their car and then begrudgingly took responsibility for their own lack of foresight when the host crashed it, right?

Actually with the shit show to our south on all the time it should be obvious there's a pretty strong tradition of public service and excellent public servants up here in Canada. Sure we have our share of clowns but we also have a cadre of people motivated to serve the public and an ethos of public service.

Are you talking to me? I was just venting cause it's pretty creepy when personal stuff gets stolen from you, especially by government workers.
My mother threw in a data stick in one package and I can't remember but it could have had my homemade porn on it.

A lot of people don't vote, and a lot of people voted for other parties than Harper. About 75% of Canadians did not vote for Harper in the last election and the majority of people who did vote did not vote for Harper.

No maui was general comment - responding to thread in general not you directly! - it's just we are kinda lucky to live here even with the jackasses we have interspersed among the Good Ones! Like even if all politicians were jerkfaces, we have strong public service in our ministries that stay year-in-year out and through the turns of political music chairs.

That's over simplistic - Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world and my experience there was overwhelmingly positive in and around Ouagadougou. Polite people... nobody trying to screw with you... police that don't need to carry weapons...

Mongolia's GDP per capita is 6-7 times that of Burkina... Culture has way more to do with it.

I had the odd thing go missing in Canada too (RIGHT DEEP)

I'm telling you, this is a whole 'nother level.

I don't want to say Westerners are spoiled

But Westerners are fucking spoiled.
