Video games to movies = extremely sketchy track record.
proof:
Tomb Raider - Great eye candy. Zero IQ. I don't care if it's got one of the guys from Red Dwarf in it and so what if it grossed $160 million? It's still pretty brain dead.
Super Mario Bros. - Proof that studio execs that did insane amounts of cocaine had brain damage.
Final Fantasy - Really had nothing at all to do with the video game. Movie looked great, but had absolutely no soul.
Double Dragon - Whatdafuck?
Street Fighter: The Movie - Jean Claude Van Damme. What else needs to be said? Poor Raul Julia goes out on a really sour note.
Mortal Kombat - A game about kicking the shit out of each other really doesn't make for a great plot. About as much fun as being poked in the eye.
Wing Commander - Wrong on so many levels. Everyone I know went to see this because it had the Star Wars Episode 1 trailer.
This might prove to be different, as this kinda has a bit of a plot. I'm waiting for an adaptation of Max Payne or Metal Gear Solid (which is being considered).
Also being looked at as being turned into film or is currently in production:
Alice (Wes Craven is involved in it, but I don't think as a director. Wes Craven's production record is nowhere near as good as his direction record. Who knows...)
Duke Nukem - Rights are being fought over this, and it looks like Joel Silver (who produced amoung many films, The Matrix and Fair Game - the best and the worst of the action spectrum) is going to get to make it.
Silent Hill - No word on who might direct it, but it's being talked about quite seriously and has popped up several times - looks like they actually get around to making it.
I don't know. The trailer looks great, but that just says to me the marketing branch did their job well.
Questions that make me skeptical:
Milla Jovovich in the lead?
Michelle Rodriguez (who although was very good in Girlfight, sucked ass in The Fast and The Furious)?
Paul Anderson directing (he did Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon. I think he's a great visual director, but he should really read scripts before he goes ahead with a movie)?
Conclusion:
Doesn't bode well with me
