I had a debate the other night with a guy who said something to the affect of "I'm not like that in real life, only on the internet," after doing and saying some rather questionable things.
Now I know the internet can uninhibit people. They get a chance to take on a new 'personality' if they want, say what they want. The only thing is, people start to forget that there are real people behind these usernames and monitors. I often hear "don't take the internet seriously," being given as advice but sometimes it should be.
Especially in on line communities like these where people know 50% of the people who post at least, or will meet them at future parties. Do you not think how you acted on the internet will influence their opinion of you. And you may say you don't care, but many of you have become friends through this thing.
I am guilty of it too. I'm in general a very honest person, on and off the boards but I guess sometimes more apt to saying things when I could let them go.
Moral of my babble? Maybe people should realize that what they say isn't affecting usernames, it is affecting people. And it's not too cool to be a "message board bitch," and act like a completely different person, IN person. And for the people who respect these people or find it funny that they are bitchy without reason (I mean excessively) I feel sorry for you.
Your Thoughts?
[please ignore the possible affect/effect mishap]
