Merry X-MAS: Here's your pink slip

So much for a rebounding economy. I found out I was getting laid off yesterday and it seems that lots of people are getting laid off around this time as well.

Merry X-Mas!

Yeah, I'm doing the same to people.

Dismissals/layoffs etc don't stop because of a holiday, unfortunately for some people.

Usually, they try to take into account the time of year and pay you accordingly, tho many companies don't.

Good luck with your search, sorry to hear about it.

That sucks. You figure a company would put a moratorium on pink slips in december. I know ours does. i guess not all.

Well its kind of a X-MAS present for me. I don't get laid off till February after which I have a decent severence. Gives me the chance to take some well deserved time off and to go travelling. Plus I was stagnating and need some new direction. This gives me the kick in the ass I needed.

However, I'm probably the exception in these cases. Some people at my company got it pretty bad.

In some cases, no.

It's better to give people a heads up before christmas. That way they don't spend an ass-load of money that will arrive in bills in january and february (lay off time).

"Hey, thanks for not telling me before christmas, I bought my family a new (fill in something horrendously expensive here), how am I going to pay for that now?!?!"

The latter half of November saw people getting laid off all over the place over here. It was my first time in that kind of environment, horrible to say the least.

Just today, the individual who spent the most time training me-- and someone I counted as a friend-- just got the axe. Feeling pretty gutted myself, I can't imagine how he must feel.

Sorry to hear about that shit, Chuckster. Good luck to you.

Ya I hate layoffs. I've seen my company go from 20 people to 170 people and now to 11 people. I've gone through 6 waves of layoffs in the last 1.5 years. Hate it. Ah well, I'm taking this as a blessing.

Another plus, is that I can chintz out on X-Mas gifts. Even better since I don't even get them anymore. :)

3 years ago my uncle got fired 10 days before christmas and 2 days after having his first child. And he was laid off for cut back reasons... thats absurd!

that's right, chuck. if you gotta go, you might as well take out some windows, some furniture and some people's front teeth while you're at it. :p

i've been hearing about lots of lay-offs as well. good luck. i'm sure you'll find something better.

Chuck remember that one layoff we did on December 20th, 2001 I think it was? It was the biggest one in Canada of over 20 employees of all-time the closest to Christmas. They truly don't care so they've done it before and they've gone and done it again, sadly it doesn't surprise me. Like you said though at least you have some time, while some of the others are getting totally screwed. It's just a matter of time before the whole company is gone anyhow, it was a strange ride that's for sure.

Maybe the company is not Christian based?

Should people laid off in October be pissed that they were canned right before Ramadan?

or not because they can't afford food now anyway? perfect timing!

PS sorry to hear about your job dude.

how is that absurd? Did becoming a father improve his employability? did the company as an entity adopt that child and are therefore responsible for the kids financial well being? bottomline is all that matters.

Bumbaclat <-- just playing devil's advocate. but seriously. your employer doesn't owe you shit.

Oh I'm not saying they really owe you either ... just a shitty time of the year to find out that's all. The worst part about the December 20th layoff was that it was announced a little while before that it was going to happen on that day. So everyone around work was a little on edge, many of the people just didn't buy any presents for people because they weren't sure if they were going to be able to pay for them come January. I know that isn't the best financial way of living but it is a reality for a lot of people.

I remember that layoff, I think it didn't help that the month before there was that huge massive layoff as well. Working the afternoon shift at the time was a blessing in disguise.

again, was it the company that had the kid? no. So they wanted to fire him but then he has a kid..... what are they going to do? Keep him around until the kid is 18, then the company CEO can go to the kids graduation, weep openly with pride and then finally fire the Dad?
