Meanwhile in Iraq... Islamic militants have seized half the country.

"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

I've been seeing a lot of headlines reading something like "ISIS threat to America greater than 9/11" or whatever and I can't help but wonder how that could be possible with the NSA in place.

Then I remember that the 2 individuals who were responsible for the Boston Bombing were on a watch-list and that Russia told the FBI specifically about their intentions (Russia warned U.S. about Boston Marathon bomb suspect Tsarnaev: report | Reuters). How they could slip through the cracks and actually cause harm to others boggled my mind.

Then I found this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/29/o...ped-along-by-the-fbi.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 which goes ahead and states "Of the 22 most frightening plans for attacks since 9/11 on American soil, 14 were developed in sting operations." Or developed by the very people in place to protect us.

Now I hear about the "imminent" threat of an ISIS attack on American soil, and with so many bureaus and branches in place supposedly tracking "terrorists" I'm just not sure how concerned I should actually be. You would think that these kind of threats are the entire reason for having the NSA in place, so that they can prevent these kind of events. But when something as simple as direct intel from KSB to the FBI can't even stop the Boston Bombing from happening, you have to start wondering what's the point, no?

So now, in order for us to be safe, we must "attack" Syria?

Also, I just feel it relative to mention the numerous times Hilary Clinton stated that America created Al-Qaeda, like WTF is going on?

ISIS is a serious threat because they have financial funds, military weapons and control a large territory. If they're allowed to continue to expand and slaughter "infidels" and actually form a Caliphate their support would grow exponentially from the tens of millions of conservative muslims worldwide who identify themselves with that ideology.

But fair enough, I see what you're saying.

sure. i'd never suggest all muslims support ISIS. there's 1.5 billion muslims. the majority are probably disgusted by ISIS, but there still remains a significant percentage that find the idea of a new caliphate appealing.

Good point. Given the regional context these guys are not all that dissimilar to other groups. They're having a bit of an ascendant moment. They seem particularly brutal - but they are in a brutal region.

The language is certainly hyperbolic - and it would be instructive I think to look at similar coverage of Al Qaeda and the Taliban and just see how much is copy+pasteable between the three.

There's a military action going on now so the rationalization machine will be in high gear. What will happen will probably not differ that much from the other times either - exaggerated threat leads to heavy handed response and unintended consequences that sow more chaos and set American geopolitical aims backwards, not forwards.

kind of understandable since there's certainly a lot that's similar between the 3 groups. Violent implementations of fundamental Islam being a common theme. But there are some important differences - ISIS has more $$, better weapons and are in control of land that has oil (which as much as everyone hates to admit it is important to global interests).

So you'd prefer there not be US air strikes? I think Obama is being pretty pragmatic about this. Airstrikes to help the Iraq and Kurdish forces, while keeping out the US army is reasonable.

Sometimes there isn't any great solution and you have to go with what appears to be the best of the bad scenarios.

The US should also be pressuring ISIS' allies to cut them off, and i'm sure they're attempting to do that behind the scenes politically.

Has anyone seen Femens response to ISIS beheading the journalist.

It's very provocative so much so that I'm afraid to post it here as it's extremely NSFW. (something I've never done before)

Ah I love it. Humour abounds.

Cheney Says Iraq Would Be Stable If He Were Still President

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Harshly criticizing the current occupant of the White House, Dick Cheney told reporters on Wednesday, “Iraq would be stable today if I were still President.”

“ISIS is a problem that President Obama has made possible,” Cheney said during a press conference on Capitol Hill. “I never would have let that happen when I was Commander-in-Chief.”

He said that he would listen to President Obama’s speech on Wednesday night about destroying the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham, but admitted that he was not expecting much. “Quite frankly, whenever President Obama talks about Iraq he sounds delusional,” he said.

I wouldn't worry about those planes. They're all tracked unless the engines are replaced. (emphasis mine)
