AMAZING night.

My feet hurt.

I have not partied like this in a while, and my comeback was with a vengeance, and very well worth the wait.

First off: The live house band was AMAZING. Having never seen live house before (kings of sunshine I believe?) I was blown away. Amazing to hear trumpet/sax/flute and realize it's not a pre-recorded track but RIGHT in front of you.

Mark Farina rocked. Pete introduced me to him polka style earlier in the night, but for my first time seeing this DJ he did not dissapoint. Smooth, sweet ass mixing, good track selection - I wasn't blown out of the water, but I was quite satisfied.

The crowd and security for once were very well done. Line moved smoothly, coat check was all good, and the security was FRIENDLY? (Maybe I should have offered him a lollipop or a PLUR hug ) anyways, This night was aces. 9.5/10. More crowd then music.

The much dreaded shout outs

KiX: BEST NIGHT EVER. What a fucking wonky day. You made my night. I'm going to fucking miss your ass pretty damn badly in thailand. You know how to get aHEAD.

Slip. Pete: Speaking of partners in crime. Tina, Pete, Allie? wha? Wicked night. You will be sorely missed, for many reasons :)

Mcbee: thanks so much for the pre-drinking gin, the lift down, and the big smiles :)

CC: Sorry I was too out of it too talk. Some lessons are best learned and remembered. see ya monday? ;)

basic: I just fucking love you. That's about it.

feet throbbing. head aching. neeeeed sleep.

My legs haven't been shaking from dancing in a long time.

I fucking love it.

Hello. My name is Tina. You may remember me from such muchmusic clips as "OH MY GOD PAUL VAN DYK IS GOD".... well, i hearby revoke that title from Paul Van Dyk, and would let you all know that MARK FARINA IS NOW GOD. just so you know.

WHOLY FUCKING SHIT ON A STICK!

That was THE most insane house set i've heard EVER. Ok... maybe not EVER EVER... but fucking close. Every track was just crazy perfect for one another, kept my ass shaking c.o.n.s.t.a.n.t.l.y.... some of the grooviest phattest funkiest house i've heard EVER (and i've heard a lot of fucking house sets). Ugh! So good! PLEASE TELL ME TAPES HAVE BEEN MADE OF THIS SET.

King Sunshine blew me awaaaay. So freakin good! Live house is so the epitomy of good music.

Sneak was fantassstic to end off the night. It has been a long long long long long time since i've still been wanting to dance at 6am. I would have loved another hour or so.

AND THE VIBE!! WOT A NUTTAH! if you were standing you were dancing, and if you were sitting your head was still bobbing. Everyone sooo happy and positive and chill..... it was intense! VERY fucking cool party forsure.

Seeing some people out i haven't seen in forever was a wicked surprise.

Big Up Yaself Corey! Wicked partying with you again... been TOO long.
Big Up Yaself Suke! For sharing the vibes upfront with me even though we didn't know it for half the night.
Big Up Yaself Allie.... I'll miss you baby.
And biggup ya chest everyone else i saw last night.... totally reminded me why i missed toronto so much.
Oh, BIG biggup for Pete... dood, even tho you lost my weed, walk downtown and monkey bar spliffs?.....BEST EVER. Thanks for giving me someone to make fun of all night. Wahahaha
Oh nice to see alexD out too.

BIG DOWNS to the piece of glass that sent my sweetie to the hospital tho!!! Missed you like crazzzy!

All over, an ALMOST perfect night.

Here, let me hand in another glowing review.

Top night in every way possible. I danced my ass off, and fucking loved the sounds coming out of those goddamn speakers.

King Sunshine had a couple whoa moments, but it wasn't until Farina dropped the first slab of vinyl on the player and hit start that things really began to heat up. It just kept coming and coming. We kept going and going. It was impossible to keep a smile off our faces. The crowd was possibly the most beautiful I've ever seen in one place in Toronto. Everyone was friendly, there was just enough room to dance, but still packed enough that you knew you were somewhere important.

I ran into a girl I backpacked around Europe with in '94. First time I'd seen her in 8 years. Ran into a friend from first year university. We'd lost touch. Ran into a guy I hung out with in Montreal last summer. It was like a giant homecoming. Then there were the tribe kids sprinkled throughout the crowd.

Every so often, it'd be "whoa, hey Steve - didn't know you were coming!", "Ivan, pleasant surprise", "Chrissy, never thought I'd find you", "Will, remember me?".

Sneak did exactly what a proper closer should do - keep up with the headliner. I didn't even notice the transition, till I looked up to see the little Farina replaced by the humungous Sneak. It was all good.

Special shout to Jayisbored for being my partner in crime throughout this bender of a weekend. I think summer has struck my mind already.

10/10

a new "best night of 2002" has been crowned folks. holy shit if that wasn't the best 6 hours in a club EVER. KingSunshine opened things up nicely, but Farina tore me a new one. Track after track of seamless glee, I didn't stop dancing all night. Sneak closed things off really well, but I was still ready to keep going for another hour or two.

Nights like these prove once again why House is at the top of the musical food chain. I really hope somebody recorded that set last night, because Mark Farina truly laid down 3+ hours of the best selections I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Thanks to Allie and Tina for hangin' and being purveyors of funtimes - Tina, early morning monkeybar sessions are silly, but not when you have tunes to get you through. you and I can be joined at the ear anyday :) That was such a wicked walk along King street, the city has never looked as good as it did this morning :)

Good to see JayIsMelbored, Josh, Suke, Mr. Flea, patio-d (where did you take off to??), sneakypete (albeit briefly), Liz and SteeeveeeeDeee.

Also, thanks to Sarah and Kevin for being the hosts with the mosts :)

DO NOT miss out on Mark Farina next time he comes to your town, this man was worth every penny of the $22 easily.

hmmm...

I dunno what party I was at but I have to say I toooootally disagree with the reviews in this thread. King Sunshine was great, I'll say that - they NEVER disappoint. Likewise, Mark Farina started off with some nice deep vocally house for the first half hour or so, got me moving...but after that his set just devolved into the most low-energy, monotonous, repetitive beats I've heard in a while. Occasionally a standout track would emerge, but for the most part I wasn't feelin' it AT ALL. This is big news for me, b/c every other time I've heard Mark (System, Steamwhistle, DEMF afterparty) he has ROCKED my world. The mixing was tight but the music was really BORING.

And this seemed to translate into the crowd too...some friendly energetic people, but except for those at the very front of the room, everyone just seemed to be swaying along. Not dancing really hard, in fact no one was doing anything really wild...meh...

My gf and I would move around the venue, place to place, and never saw anyone that looked like they were doing anything other than going through the motions...

Chalk this one up as a MEDIOCRE night for me...

i agree with you. it didn't make much sense to me.. you have a loud system and a few thousand people at your feet, if you're a DJ you should be tearing the f'in place out!!! every once in a while you'd get teased with something that really made you smile, and it was followed through with, yep, more monotonous. repetitive beats!

and anyone whose seen mark farina a few times before can totally tell you he's very capable of bringing the place down when he wants to (countless nights at industry... nearly bringing people to tears when he played paul simon's you can call me al at a Ritual party 3 years ago)

recognised a ton of tribers from pic threads but didn't go up to any.

No problem tella. Anytime ;)

Track of the night had to be that dancehall reggae track over the looped house beat with the back drop. That track picked up the place.

Let me add my $0.02!

Again.....after seeing Deep Dish, Sasha and Digweed, and LaFleche...I ventured back into Kool Haus for another hit em up show. This time it's Mark Farina who has quite the following.

Forget the King Sunshine band. Ok...maybe not forget em...live music is kewl, but maybe if I was at Lee's Palace or Phoenix or something. They were boring and it appeared to me that the Toronto folk were just being kind by moving a few limbs. Hey, all of the folks in the band are players....I will give props for that......Two bass players, horns, vocals, keyboards, percussionists, and drummer to boot.......but did they really pump up the crowd? Methinks that this sorta downtempo instrumental interlude puts the headliner DJ in the more desireable and favourable position of "Pumping Up" the crowd. All of this "live" stuff was putting me in a bad mood and my alcoholic buzz was drifting to placing my ass on a comfy couch. The band was zapping my energy....I was losing my superpowers......

Help!

When Farina stepped to the decks....IT WUZ OVA!

I have to admit with all of the prog house events that I have been attending, I have forgotten what true house music sounds like. Farina put the soul back in our steps with his deep and jiving tunes.

Everyone was luving it. It wasn't about dancing hard. This was music tonight folks. The kinda tunes that put broad smiles across everyone's faces. The kinda tunes that allow you to feel sexy as a futhermucker while you strut your shit. The kinda tunes that make you feel as though your fairy god mother granted you a wish and placed the ticket in your hand for this event. Mark Farina was a purist in fine form last night.

Gotta love that Fat Albert track.

Even at a place as large as Kool Haus......you could feel the love. I'm not saying that this was the best party of the year......nor was this the best music that I have ever heard. All I am saying is that Farina is for real.

Can u dig it? From Chicago to San Fran to Toronto. House Music!

Damn aren't we lucky to live in this city and be frequented by all of this talent?

Lates.

P.S. I wasn't into Sneak's Beats....!
sorry if there are spelling errors!

king sunshine was unreal. at first when they stepped on i caught myself shaking my head thinking "oh god, another live house band". but this is no ordinary live house music. oh no... this was actually good. the way that they worked together was amazing. it seemed for a while like the were just jamming, but the way the conducted their whole set was nothing that you can just string together. all of the musicians were great (imagine that.... musicians). some of which showed off their talents on more than one instructment. each of them got an opportunity to dazzle us with their skills, taking different solos for different songs.... i must say that i have become their newest fan!!!!!!!

as for farina... whatever. he started out with some amazing tracks, and then he just got into the grove and played some decent tracks. it was a pretty laid back set which i was expecting, which was nice, but he didn't do anything overly amazing. his mixing was good although he didn't really try anything that difficult. doing soft, short mixes on two decks with soulful/deep house is not enough to have me give great praise. he was good and i enjoyed the set, but he will not make my list of top djs.

the kool haus and the night as a whole was pretty good. the crowd seemed friendly and i got to go with a few good friends so i can't complain. i had a lovely evening, that unfortunately came to a close early as i am growing old beyond my years and i more than anything want to be in my bed at a decent hour...... (i often wonder how i used to stay up all night)

i trust i missed lots of fun by leaving early, but like i said i was tired and i felt i already got my money's worth just by seeing king sunshine.

Hey Suke - good chillin witcha last night!

For me, track of the night was that remix of Michael Jackson's PYT.

I have to dust off my copy of Thriller and give that a spin - he's got the funk.
