Malcolm Maclaren RIP

The Truth

Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of punk group the Sex Pistols, has died in New York, aged 64, his agent has said.

McLaren, the ex-partner of designer Vivienne Westwood, was believed to have been diagnosed with cancer a while ago.

He set up a clothes shop and label with Westwood on London's King's Road in the 1970s and was later a businessman and performer in his own right.

The couple had a son, Joseph Corre, the co-founder of lingerie shop Agent Provocateur.

His agent told the BBC McLaren passed away on Thursday morning.

Spokesman Les Malloy said he expected McLaren's body to be returned to the UK before it is buried in Highgate Cemetery.

He said McLaren died at his home after his condition suddenly got worse.

He said the artist's family was "devastated" and "in shock" and said: "He had been doing very well, it's a sad day. I have spoken to his partner."

McLaren also managed a number of other bands, including the New York Dolls and Bow Wow Wow before producing his own records including the much-sampled track Double Dutch from the 1983 album Duck Rock.

McLaren emerged from art school in the 1960s and with Westwood, set up Let It Rock - a fashion store specialising in rubber and leather fetish gear.

It was later, infamously, renamed "Sex" and he and Westwood defined punk fashion.

He went on to manage the Sex Pistols in 1976 although there was a falling out and he later lost a court case over royalties.

McLaren dabbled in politics and at one point, toyed with the idea of entering the race for the Mayor of London.

In 2007, he pulled out of an appearance on the reality show I I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here, after changing his mind about the show.

Between December last year and this January, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead hosted an exhibition by McLaren of "musical paintings" on the issue of sex.

I have mixed feelings about this.

As for the legend comment that might be a stretch, influential sure
but more opportunistic than anything else.

I'll wait to see what Johnny has to say

What's the point? Johnny keeps saying the samo contrarian crap anytime he's near a mic. Why anyone still pays attention long enough to hear his eventual & highly predictable Punk Rock blowoff is beyond me...

Yes he does but he probably knew M.M better than most along with Vivienne Westwood. Just so you can see what I meant Johnny actually had alot of respect for the guy aside from the politics and lawsuits.

I remediate old industrial sites for a living. They are full of nasty things like asbestos. I’m sure the in the early punk scene, much like in the early rave scene, people frequented marginal places like abandoned factories and warehouses. His exposure could have came from this since it takes 20 to 50 years for Mesothelioma to occur after exposure.

Are you sure it wasn't a specific Sex Pistols track?

Yup, it wasn't the standard 2-3 songs you usually hear on the radio. And the station I was listening too, tends to do that to mark an important occasion like this.

I like what John Lydon had to say about him, as kyfe posted above. Shows that even though their relationship had deteriorated over the years, he still respected and liked the man.

Sylvain Sylvain had a nice comment about him too.

fuck him

he was a scumbag who ripped off anybody he could

This was part of the issue I had with MM, but you have to give the guy credit, if it wasn't for him who knows if punk would even have happened. He took nobodys to the studio and made them rich even though they couldn't really play instruments.

Either way the guy had vision and an eye for talent.

funny tidbit Sid Vicious could have been the lead singer of the sex pistols but MM met Johnny first and offered the gig to him.
