if you're not dead set on a puppy, you can always adopt/rescue

the basenji club of canada:

there's a sighthound webring, but i can't seem to locate it.

i've been told italian greyhounds can be oddly neurotic, and very difficult to house train (something to do with their small bladder and unable to control it when very excited).

look into whippets. size-wise, they're between the italian greyhound and the greyhound. i don't know any italian greyhound breeders in ontario, but if you're interested in a whippet i can certainly help you out.

I am interested in whippets as well. They are almost like a cross between basenjis and IGs.

Whippets look exactly like greyhounds, but are about half the size. Italian Greyhounds are even smaller (toy size).

This is my whippet

I got her from Lauralbriar Whippets, a breeder in Muskoka. She won't be having another litter for about another year or so. She has a website, though it's been down for a while now. I can give you her contact info if you'd like.

Some other breeders in Ontario:

National Whippet Club of Canada. Lists some other breeders, has some info on the breed, and other things whippet.

Your whippet is beautiful, what is their temperment?

Any whippet I have met has been friendly, a bit shy, and quite calm.

This is a basenji, the one pictured is just off the internet, but I had one growing up, they are a handfull, but a great pet:

Here is an italian greyhound:

To me all three breeds have a lot in common.

Greyhounds, Whippets, and IGs are related. Basenjis aren't related to them, but are sighthounds as well.

Whippets are great dogs. Super friendly and quite active. My dog is especially hyper, but fun. They've been described as having only two modes: hyper and comatose. It's quite true. When she wants to play and run, she's pretty crazy, but otherwise she's passed out cold on the couch.

They love to be close to their owners all the time, and so tend to follow you around the house. They also love to be under blankets, cozy and snuggly. If you don't like the idea of your dog sleeping on your couch and in your bed, don't get a Whippet.

They're good around other dogs and small kids. Cheeba let's my friend's kids climb all over her, pinch her, pull her tail etc.

The only downside to owning a sighthound is it's recommended you not let them off leash in open parks. When out walking, they tend to be in hunting mode, and it's hard to get their attention when they're focused on stalking a squirell or shit-hawk. They're known to just take off on a chase and keep going and going. I've run into many Whippet owners over the past 3 years who've let their dogs off leash and ended up losing them.

There's an Ontario sighthound racing association. They race and lure from spring to fall around southern Ontario (for fun of course, as betting on race dogs is illegal in Canada). It's great seeing all the various sight hounds run like mad.

If you have any other questions just ask.

A couple more links if you want to read up on them. The first one gives a good overview of temperment and what to expect if you own a whippet.

If owners are like their dogs then this describes Paul perfectly. ;)

Google search the term "mikeryan", that will turn up a lot of English Jerk Terrier sites.
