HOLY CHRIST.

could this get any worse....I think it'll have a big impact, in that he's a big guy up front, and in a game 7 you need ALL the muscle you can get, especially with these jerks.

so far though, the home team has owned it, lets hope that stands true...this is too tense for my likeing....but then again, jersey is out allready, so anything can happen.

did whatshisnuts get booted for his headbutt? or is it once again time to penalize the canadian team night in the nhl?

And Carins is from Toronto....I think that guy should stand up and say that he's ashamed to play for a team that has fans that would boo a countries national anthem over a hockey game.

I know I would If I was a player there....could those dumb twats be as naive as to think that their team is actually composed of americans?

or that Canada is thier enemy.....that's just beyond me....Carins should have given a press confrence.....Peca too.

all those fuckers.

The Leafs should protest the suspension. The delay will allow Corson to play tommorow and they'll have a hearing sometime after game 7.

^^^^agreed....they should protest on the grounds that it wasn't worthy of a suspension anyhow.

it was a fight, one of many, and one that corson didn't even win if you ask me....this is really lame in my opinion.

I'd hate for the season to end like this...we just have to hold on and hopefully we'll get carolina huricanes next.

Wasn't a headbut, his head was about 1-1.5 feet away from Corson's, it looked like he was ducking from another camera angle.

on some replays you can see that he never made contact with him....so that's not an arguement.

but it looked as though he tried maybe......never connected....but who cares, this fight was nothing....the fights in game 3 were worse than these..

what the crap is the suspension about?

this is fucking junk.

It doesnt matter if he connected or not.
Its in the rule book just the same as kicking.
You dont do it, zero tolerance for even attempting it.

If your gonna suspend one, your suspend both of them.

This year has been a fuckin joke with both officials and handling suspensions.

We've done great without forwards in previous games... look what happenned when we lost Reichel due to a technicality in game 5.

No worries. It'll be a great game. And we'll win. -D

'No way was I attempting to kick Cairns:' Corson

Apr. 30, 2002. 01:00 PM
By Josh Rubin
Staff Reporter thestar.com

With their season hanging in the balance against the New York Islanders, the Toronto Maple Leafs are more than a little upset they’ve been left shorthanded by a suspension to centre Shayne Corson.
Corson was suspended for tonight's Game 7 by league disciplinarian Colin Campbell for attempting to kick Islander defenceman Eric Cairns during a fight late in Sunday night’s Game 6 loss.

Corson didn’t speak to the media today, and instead issued a written statement saying he disagreed with the suspension.

``I want to make it very clear that in no way was I attempting to kick Eric Cairns. The focus today should be on my teammates as they prepare for tonight’s game,’’ said Corson in his statement.

Leaf defenceman Wade Belak was less restrained in his criticism of the suspension, describing it as a ``joke.’’

``I can see it if he actually hit him, but he didn’t. It’s completely unfair,’’ said Belak.

Even Leaf netminder Curtis Joseph, usually loathe to criticize, ripped Campbell’s decision, saying it set a dubious precedent.

``I don’t know what it was, maybe attempted kicking? If they call that, there’d be a whole lot of attempted slashing and attempted elbowing they’d have to call,’’ said Joseph, adding Corson’s absence will be tough to take because of his crucial role in handling the Isles' Alexei Yashin.

``It’s unfortunate because he’s been one of our main players in the playoffs,’’ said Joseph.

Tie Domi, who was suspended during last year’s second round for a vicious elbow to the head of New Jersey defenceman Scott Niedermayer, wouldn’t comment on Corson’s suspension. Domi said he’s hoping tonight’s game won’t spin a tough physical series even further out of control.

``It’s going to be very physical, obviously, but I hope it’s physical in the right way,’’ said Domi.

For much of the series, Corson has been shadowing Yashin in a reprise of their battle from last year’s first round when Yashin played for the Ottawa Senators.

Unfortunately for Leaf fans, Corson will have plenty of company on the sidelines. Last week the Leafs lost captain Mats Sundin to a broken wrist suffered in Game 1. In Game 4, the Leafs were left shorthanded after Sundin decided shortly before game time he couldn’t play because of the cast.

Mikael Renberg, Sundin’s right winger, is also likely gone for the playoffs. Although Renberg said he’ll take part in the pre-game skate before deciding, the Leafs aren’t counting on him being able to play. Renberg looked shaky during the team’s practice this morning.

Veteran defenceman Dmitry Yushkevich has been out since before the Olympics with a blood clot in his leg. Although the clot has become considerably smaller, doctors believe it could still pose a risk.

The Isles aren't without injuries either.

Islanders captain Mike Peca suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his knee when hip checked by Leaf Darcy Tucker in Game 5 of the series and is gone from the playoffs, as is defenceman Kenny Jonsson.

Jonsson was knocked unconscious in the same game after being crushed into the boards on a vicious check by Leaf Gary Roberts.

Islanders forward Brad Isbister has missed the last three games of the series with a wrist injury and is a game-time decision.

meh. the NHL knows that no matter how badly the leafs do in a year the franchise is safe here, the islanders are struggling as a money making operation so a good playoff run will help them a lot - therefore we get the penalties and the suspensions.

Even though the Maple Leafs have the last change, Alexei Yashin will never have an easier time shedding his 202-pound shadow than he will tonight.

The Maple Leafs learned last night that Shayne Corson has been suspended for Game 7 against the Islanders for his attempted kick at Islanders defenceman Eric Cairns during a fight at 18:10 of the third period of Game 6 Sunday night. NHL vice-president Colin Campbell handed down the suspension, saying that the fact that Corson had been fined $1,000 (U.S.) for a slashing incident on Dave Scatchard in Game 1 had a bearing on his decision.

"After a thorough review of the game circumstances and the videotape, it is clear that Mr. Corson's kicking action was deliberate and dangerous," Campbell said in a prepared statement. "In reaching this decision, I also took into consideration that there is nothing in playing the game that would justify kicking your opponent and that Mr. Corson had been fined earlier in the series as a result of a match penalty for a slashing incident in Game 1."

Corson could not be reached for comment, but his brother-in-law and teammate Darcy Tucker said Corson was taken aback by the ruling.

"He's pretty upset," Tucker said, "especially since it's Game 7."

Tucker said he thought the punishment was severe considering the fact that Corson claimed that Cairns pulled his hair and head-butted him during the same fight.

"If there was contact, maybe there would be a problem, but (Corson) didn't even touch (Cairns) and that's what makes it so ridiculous," Tucker said. "But I guess head-butting is fine. That must be a new part of the game. Tell me the difference."

That leaves the Leafs entering their most important game of the year without their captain and best player (Mats Sundin), one of their best defencemen (Dmitry Yushkevich), likely one of their best players along the boards and in the corners (Mikael Renberg) and their best defensive forward (Corson).

"It's just motivation for us," Tucker said. "Another thing that motivates us."

Maple Leafs GM-coach Pat Quinn said he didn't think that Corson made a kicking motion during the fight.

"It was anatomically impossible for (Corson) to kick (Cairns) where he was," Quinn said. "(Corson) brought his knee up, but there was no kick."

The Islanders were livid with Corson and Cairns said Corson's actions broke hockey's somewhat warped code of honour.

"For him to try to kick me when I'm down, that's above and beyond," Cairns said.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

i get it, you shatter a guys' face with a clothesline and that gets you two games, attempting to maybe kick a guy is a game, elbowing is the rest of the playoffs plus 8 games, hair pulling and head butting is no penalty. when you're a leaf charging across the ice and hitting a guy gets you 5 minutes but when your an isle charging across the ice the smashing a guy in the face with your stick (drawing blood) is no penalty.

yes, it all makes sense now.

that's a pretty clear - you're playing for an american team against a canadian team so no suspension for you trend
