Oi Evay! It's like no one can be motivated anymore because their move will be analyzed and counter-analyzed for something alterior, like record sales.

If I got the chance to do what she did and had the balls to weather the shitstorm I would create in my own family I would seriously consider it. Speaking out against priest child molestation at the Vatican is a major blow against the establishment.

The Vatican deserved a punch in the nose in this regard and she gave it to them.

Also, I believe Sinead added something about sexual abuse to Bob Marley's lyrics during that performance on SNL.

not personally, cause i'm not a priest... but she totally generalized.. like she made it seem as if every single catholic priest was a pedophile, whereas that's not the case... pedophelia happens in all sorts of circumstances, esp when the person is in a position of influence, be it a priest (catholic or otherwise... oops, she forgot to mention that, didn't she) teacher, daycare supervisor whatever... and yeah, i agree that he didn't want to respond to "insult with insult".. and i also think it was in bad taste and showed a total lack of respect.. but that's just my personal opinion.

Dude it's a FACT that the church has a serious problem with pedophilia okay? The church doesn't seem to want to deal with it.

What she said might have something to do with the fact that she has kids and isn't down with pedophilia, as opposed to just grabbing a bit of controversy.

Lack of respect? Maybe she has nothing but contempt for the leadership that simply tried to sweep the whole affair under the rug. They don't deserve respect.

if you hate the leadership you hate all the constituents that fall under them, haven't you learned anything from america?

While I don't think that what Lauryn Hill said was untrue or offensive in and of itself, she did show monumental disrespect and bad taste by doing it when and where she did.

Would you accept an invitation to a dinner at someone's house, stand up to toast them, and then go off on them in front of a lot of guests? Probably not.

She looks like just as big of a hypocrite as the church, since she accepted their invitation to the Vatican (and perhaps got paid to perform).

If she really cared about the issue (as opposed to simply creating a stir), she should have brought the issue up elsewhere (or at least declined the invitation to perform).

I highly doubt Lauryn did this for publicity purpose. As others have said, she's a passionate woman and she's known for her outspokenness. She doesn't have a new album to hawk so it's not like she has a reason to draw attention to herself. She's totally withdrawn from public life since her bizarre "Unplugged" performance.

I believe it's as she said it was...she was given the opportunity so she took it.

Good point diablo. If the church won't listen to the testimonies of their victims over the years why would they listen to her.

Maybe the reason why the bishop walked out was because it was badly translated.

Maybe the translator told the bishop that LH said " GO BACK TO RUSSIA YOU ALTER BOY DIDDLING WHITEBREAD BIBLE THUMPER!"

hey, it could happen.

So why was she never "outspoken" about this issue anywhere else?

I can respect Sinead O'Connor because she did it on SNL. If she had asked to speak at a Catholic charity event or something and done it there, it would have been stupid.

Hill, like many other celebrities has the power to stand up on a soapbox and speak to 7,000 people on a give day. That is an amazing perk to be a celebrity.

She was offered this opportunity and took it. No one in memory has slammed the Catholic church for their sexual problems on their own grounds, have they.

She will most likely get more negative than positive press for this. I cannot believe she is so cynical and manipulative that she would shout out stuff like that for publicities sake.

what she did was kill her career...she DOES have balls but in retrospect so does Richard Gere,if he hadn't done 2 BIG movies in the last couple years he would be shunned and forgotten.Sinead was never the same And it damaged her name to the point where she had to change her image to a degree and it's no different in the case of lauren...who does she think she is BONO?...she basically just put the noose around her own neck but we love her for it :)

pride and feeling strong for a cause vs. a long lasting career

that's the question...and I truly don't think she made the right one, she's seriously fallen off after the miseducation of...LP...her choice but she'll wake up next week KNOWING she may have made a mistake

I think good points have been made regarding whether Hill was in good taste or respectful.

However...

Taste is a wholly human social contrivance. It is not against any laws to act in poor taste, nor is taste relavant when you are againt someone. It is in extremely poor taste to punch a guy in the nose but sometimes that guy has it coming to them.

Respect is something that is earned and I think I can empathise with Hill if she feels justified in not giving them respect.

It was a confrontational, even warlike act. Taste and respect may not necessarily apply.

somehow i don't think this will kill her career.

Actually there is no acceptable excuse to defend those who personally committed these crimes.

she's made some stupid comments in the past(remember the one about whitey buying her records??) she doesn't think before she speaks sometimes so hopefully she won't regret WHY,HOW,and WHAT she was actually saying
