As for the IBM laptops I had one when I worked for them and they're nice but WAY overpriced.

not arguing the high cost, but there really isn't anything close to that level of tank factor in PC land

Oh yeah for sure. Plus they have lotsa nice security features built into them. From what I've seen it is mostly companies that buy these laptops for their employees rather than people buying them for their own personal/business use.

Personally I don't like the look of the IBM laptops and I don't like the feel of the keypad. I'm sure the performance is good though. If you are a fan, I did find this great deal here . It is factory refurbished I believe but you can get a two year warranty for $50.

Toshiba for reliability
New IBM G40 for the thinnest most ill fucking notebook on the market.

Compaq for a solid business notebook without a lot of toys.

I work for a reseller and we sell all brands, including Apple.

PM me and I can put you in touch with a sales person if you want.

I recently grabbed an Acer Aspire 2000 and I'm really digging it so far:

Centrino 1.6
15.4" widescreen
512 RAM
60 GB HD
DVD burner
3 usb 2.0 ports
firewire
802.11b
bluetooth
4-in-one card reader slot
6.7 lbs

2500 bones. it's silver and black and looks slick.

cheers,

Things you should know about the Centrino, although they are clocked at 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7Ghz. They actually perform more like 2.3Ghz+ Pentium 4 computers.

I know the benchmarks have put the 1.7Ghz Centrino up there with a 2.6-2.7 Ghz Mobile Pentium 4.

Also, with laptops, the Hard Drive is important. Try to find a 7200RPM notebook HD, It makes a huge difference, especially for CAD, Video, and music production.

Also, I have had tonnes of problems with Toshiba notebooks, the most common problem being the headphone jack. Everyone I know with a Toshiba has had the same problem where the headphone jack will get damaged pretty quickly, IE broken off the motherboard. Toshiba has recognized its a major problem, but needs to replace the whole motherboard to fix the problem, which costs $1000+. I have heard of them not supporting the replacement unless you get angry. SO for music fans out there, be warned.

i will say, that if not for these nifty apple laptops...the IBM i have from 3 yrs ago, is still a power machine despite many abuses.
