Lack of sleep

I figure this is a pretty good place to ask about this topic, considering there are probably alot of us that don't get as much sleep as we should.

Does anyone know about the physical/mental issues related to long term sleep deprivation? Like, not just pulling an all nighter on occasion, but getting very little sleep on a regular basis.

I'm aware of the obvious, such as you'll be tired and cranky etc. but while you sleep, your body repairs itself, no?? So when you don't get enough, what are the first things that'll be affected?

If anyone has any info on this, i'd appreciate it.
It's for a friend.... ;)

-lowered immune system
-short term memory problems
-attention problems
-hormone problems, mainly thyroidal, and reduced ability to deal with insulin

Pretty well has wide-ranging effects...those are off the top of my head...

Lots of people blame drugs for those problems, but the link is indirect, through the drug(s) fucking with your circadian rhythms.

Well, I just lost my job. For violating the attendance policy at work. You can chalk it up to sleep depravation/depression. It seems as I've gotten older (26), my body just can't do what it used to. That is being in to work at 6:50am every day after just a few hours sleep a night.

It seems the first few days of the week, I can do it, (must be the adrenoline) but come thurs/fri, my body just won't respond.

So I make it to work at 7:45am this morning, only to be told to turn around and go home, I've been fired. :(

It's not over yet, as I have a union (uaw), but who knows.

FUCK.

Also, you can't just "catch up" on losing sleep one night by sleeping more the next. Get 6 hours of sleep one night, in order to get back to normal, you need a total of an extra 5 hours of extra sleep or so.

What this means is that long-term sleep dep takes a month of 8 hour nights of good sleep for you to get back to normal.

Of course, there are ways to get around this, involving bright lights at the right time, and doses of melatonin... PROPERLY TIMED.

I can fuck with my patterns every weekend, and they are back to normal by tuesday...

Thanks for the info Timo.
I didn't know it took so long for people to catch up... :(

It screws with your metabolism too, doesn't it?
Was that the whole thyroid thing you mentioned?

There are plenty of other things sleep deprivation does to you that disrupts your normal life patterns.

Underactive Thyroid emisions causes many problems as well - including; reduced apitite, lack of energy, moodyness, lowered libido, depression and all sorts.

When I'm tired, I just stimulate my Adrenaline Control Module, by pressing a button on the side of my face - and flood my veins with sweet adrenaline.

Wakes me up real quick.

i get major migranes if i don't get enough sleep, and i can't take ephedrine, i don't like how i feel when i take it, i get all jittery. I hate taking drugs just so i can function in the morning but thats usually the case, i haven't been sick much lately, try taking vitE everyday, my mom swears by that, she says she hasn't got sick for over a year.

ang:)

I can't handle lack of sleep like i used to.

i 'm so tired in the evenings, i have to go to bed around 11ish.
and i'm finding that after a week of work, i have no desire to go out both saturday and friday nites...all i want do is chill at home and relax. i feel more refreshed and relaxed during the days on the weekend cuz of it, instead of feeling like ass.

however, i feel like i'm still lacking something. i've had a massive headache, on and off for like 3 weeks now.
i wish i could get rid of it!!!

funny, I just finished reading an article in the star on sleep deprivation. here's what they say suffers:

-focus
-short-term memory
-creativity
-ability to handle stress

we need eight hours of sleep a night, losing even one shows signs of suffering. the article says when you're sleep-deprived on a chronic basis you believe that the way that you feel is normal, and that most people have no idea how sleep-deprived they are. the national highway traffic safety administrations say about 100,000 car crashes happen a year due to drowsiness.

-Mercury- that really sucks about the job man. I hear ya though - I'm almost 29 (!) and I don't party nearly as much as I used to. It's not just age, but the frequency of partying which can burn you out. hope you find something else soon.

so everybody go to bed early tonight!

I've slept the last two nights - entirely - on my couch.
I wake up 2 or 3 times during the night... realize I'm on the couch... think "I should really go to bed" - and YET I STAY ON THE COUCH!?!?!?
It’s really stupid - I feel like shit in the morning cause i didn't get a good sleep.
I'm an idiot.

I'm the king of pulling the "unexpected couch" sleep.

It sucks the bag - especially when you've got a huge wikkid bed waiting for your sweepy ass!

Whateva...

I'm going to be late for work.

i only get about 4 hours of sleep a night.....i would like to sleep more but my body won't let me.....after 4 hours i wake up naturally and no matter what i do i cannot get back to sleep, which is horrible if i go to be at midnight cuz then i'm up at four and bored until i hafta go to work...i've been doing that for years and haven't noticed any problems whatsoever....but, that's most likely just me....

i've been getting into the bad habit of coming home, eating and then snoozing for about 45 minutes. after the nap i feel great, i can go workout or do something else in the evening but it means that i can't get to sleep at night until about 12 or later. which leads to a 7 hour or less sleep for me and then i'm ready for a nap again the next evening.

it feels great after the nap - having the TV on helps most of the time. But the problem is that i can't get to sleep at night which makes me tired during the day and then i need the nap in the evening. *wash*rinse*repeat*.

I remember reading something a while back about how your body does most of it's major repair and recovery work in the first 3-4 hours of a night's sleep.

So by this logic, wouldn't t be better to sleep in two 4-hour shifts than in one 8-hour shift?
